Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | Thanks again guys for the nice replies. Joe it was really nice to spend time talking to you and Duff at the Chicago Musky Show! Your baits are amazing!!!! Woodie........ I got to you up your way for the first time last year with Kevin LaRouche. We stayed at the Bell river. You must be close to there. Kevin pointed out a person's house that make the "Artifact" lures. (sp?) I like that style of musky fishing. It reminds me of the Lake Erie walleye fishing. Big boards and open water. Fatfingers I owe you alot!!!!! A chance meeting at lake we both fish while pulling our boats. He told me he makes lures and he started me down this crazy adventure! I'll get you back! Pikester............ This is how I do the walleye lures..... I will choose the body profile that I want to try. Then I will get the lip in it and then seal the bait. I will see if the action is what I want first before I move on. Next I will tape off the lip and paint the bait white with a base coat of spray can enamel from walmart. Like a buck a can! The color paint........ I have been using the createx paint for the walleye baits. I like the bright colors. I have not tried the auto-air yet. If I let the base white dry for a couple of hours I have not had any problems with the water base over that. Then I will choose some track colors that I want to have on the bait. They can be yellows , blue's, or any color that you like. At this time I will clear coat the bait with Envirotex. But.............. peal back the tape first. The epoxy will get under the tape and mess your lip up. I learned this the hard way! I put it on my lure spinner and let dry for 24 hours. You can do foiling or any other type of foils also. The epoxy will level every thing out after the first coat. For the last step I will do the other details on the bait. Head / gills....... scales........ tiger stripes......etc. Re tape the lip first....... I have had no problem with the second coat sticking. But......... I spray very lightly on the second painting. It doesn't take much paint to bring out the detail. The nice thing is with one clear coat on the bait is if you don't like it you can wipe it off and try again. Walmart has some neat glitters in their scrap-book making area. I just add them to the clear coat and apply to the bait. There are so many glitters out there. The one day my 5 year old was doing some coloring. She had this thing called a glitter stick from Crayola. It has a clear glue with the glitter. I did some streaks on some of the them on the side of the baits only. I did that before the first coat of the clear. latley I have been playing around with the resins from ALumilte. I learned it from a tutorial on "tackle underground" I make a slip mold of the walleye bait and hold it in place in a pvc pipe with wires. I bought some RTV silicone and poured into the pipe with the bait in it. The next day I made a cut in the top of the mold and pulled the bait out like your foot out of sock. I cut a cone in the top of the mold so I could pour the resin into the top. You have to put the silicone back into the pvc pipe. The resin will expand so you need to keep it tight while it sets. It will distort you lure body Resin sinks by its self. You need to add a powder called "micro-ballons" so the bait will float. The heat of the re-action makes it expand into little air bubbles and lava's out the top of the mold until the expansion is done. It was nice to try this to make alot of bodies fast so I could experiment with colors. It saved a bunch of time not having to shape wood bodies over and over with such a small bait. My fingers were happy and still all connected. Here a bunch of photo's that I took tonight. It may help with the explanation of the process. I finished up 5 last night of the new style. It worked out great. I made 20 bodies in an hour last week with the resin. All the walleye baits before were made of cedar and poplar. It won't feel so bad snagging one and loosing it now. Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | Over the last couple of years I have been experimenting with walleye baits. When the big ones come into the shoreline of Lake Erie in the fall they are looking for big baits. The problem....... The water is in the low 40's. Husky Jerks tend to loose their wobble at .9 to 1.1 mph. If the you get a bait that is too active they will not chase. I had found out the big fish are lazy and want an easy target. Two years ago I played with some jointed bigger baits. They really worked well. This past year they would not touch them. I played with the line tie on the nose and in the lip. Both had their times. The jointed baits worked well in the nose. The stick baits worked great with a lip anchor. You could achieve the same action with the two different styles. At such a slow speed the lip tie baits did not dive deep. That was a good thing! Here are some pictures of baits from two years ago. We had some nice nights that year. We had two nights with four fish over ten pounds. Two were over 11 pounds and one was over 12 pounds. The window is very small in the fall with weather knocking at the door! It is all done after dark. The best time is around 1 to 2 am in the morning. The batteries went. 36" of ice to fish on......... Wow! Up north you get some thick ice. All the lakes opened up here in the Cleveland area. They are catching some pike already. Beaver nice to finally talk to you also. I hope your hand operation went well. Tmusky, Here is a some stuff I use on the some of the walleye baits and musky lures. It is a sheilding tape that is used in high tech electronics. It is a peal and stick product. If you do a search on "shielding tape by 3M" links will come up. I just got some on ebay in a tin. It is not cheap but goes a long way. The copper stuff you can get in smooth and with this pattern. The 6 inch wide stuff is used for electric guitars. You can also buy silver HVAC tape at a home improvement store also. I claim no fame on the foiling. People like Fatfingers, Husky , Rowhunter and Jerry Podmarsky are at the top of the list in my book for doing foil finishes. Sorry if I missed any others. I know the Euro builders are incredible also..... The names slip my mind at the moment and man can they make some baits!!!!!!!!!! One thing about the foil, I have found that if you wrap a bait leave a space between the two sides. I have found that I have had better bonding with my style when the epoxy can get around the edges. Don't worry about the gap ........ the first coat of epoxy will make it paintable to hide. If you go to tackle underground and do searches on "foiling" you would be amazed on some of the stuff that is done. I hope this helps a little. Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | Here are some other walleye styles I played around with last year. I caught some nice fish on them. They are called the "Billboard" It has a nice high side to paint on. The one night we had 3 fish over ten pounds. ( 10.3 That I am holding on the left, 11.6 in the middle (rapala product), and the camera guy caught the one on the right at 10.63 lbs) It was a special night for the big bite fish.

Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | Here are some mini little shad styles. I got this nice one last summer trolling 70 foot of water out of Lake Erie. I ran it behind a dipsey diver. Just over ten pounds during the day. I also caught some little inland lake buggers with this style after ice-out casting the dam faces. Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | Here are two other styles. The first are a shad style bait. I got a nice 8-1/2 pounder last Sunday running it on Lake Erie. It came off the downrigger 60 foot down. The other style is a minnow bait. I got a 9 pound fish on the clown one last fall. I hope to run the little perch through the fall perch pack this fall. BIG walleyes love to eat perch! I think I will tear up the steelhead on the fire red one this fall off the river mouths! Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | Well this in my next crazy thing. I use to do a ton of salmon fishing in the 80's and 90's. I got away from it for a while. Lake Ontario is only 3.5 hours away and fish stage off the Niagra River this time of year. I use to run a ton of J-plugs back then as the fish staged off the river mouths. I made up some of my own versions to run in a couple of weeks. I did a little Flatfish also. They are made of Mahogany. The one with tails are Cedar. I thought it would keep the bait lively with the tail attached. Man the mahogany is a nice wood to work with! I hope to have some luck with them! I'll keep you posted! Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | I almost forgot .............. I made up some fly's to run behind the dodgers and spindoctors. I thought it a waste to throw away the extra epoxy after coating the lures. I started to make some epoxy heads with it. I tied a pass-thru line with hooks. They up and down line. Epoxy and tinsel hair can get messy! Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | Lehigh, I don't mean it to be that way. If someone can get inspiration to make their own lures or to try a pattern.............. fantastic. I think all lures are beautiful. I really think that the fish don't take if a lure has one of these fancy paint jobs. I think the action of the lure is more important my friend.
