Thanks for the kind words guys. I know they are way over done and fish don't care how fancy the paint jobs are. Still fun to play around with.

Sava........ I am glad you caught a nice pike on the lure. That was neat sending one to Moscow, Russia. I hope you are doing well.

I am so crazy about walleye fishing. I can troll and cast for hours waiting for a bite with not a even a thought of wasted time. I hope some day to apply that to musky fishing but those darn walleyes have a hold of me now.

Well the night bite is starting up here in Cleveland, Ohio. Here are a couple new ones I made for this Fall's night fishing. Starting to have some success with them! Lots of foil sided baits.

Now go second bait. Very beautiful natural perch.

Time of fishing at the expense of the lifetime is not counted.
This time is not lost for life

Very interesting experiments with fiber-optics. And how it will look on the big sinking jerkbait (8-9 inches for a working depth of 1.5-2 meters)? Many points on the body is not necessary. 1-3 points will be enough (the eyes, the middle of the body, tail). Importantly, pike see a bright point of attack in troubled waters

Hey everyone, I hope everyone had a great winter and the start of a good Spring. I have been watching the crazy weather you guys are having up North! That jet stream is mess up for sure.

Well as a kid I have always been fascinated with taxidermy. It just looked like alot of work doing the fleshing / skinning part of the process. I go to the musky shows and I am AMAZED at the replica work I see. I think I spend half the show looking at all the beautiful replica's hanging in the booths. My most favorite part of the luremaking is making the molds for the lures. One day I was cruising the web and decided to type in "making fish replica's" I found some videos and next thing I know I was ordering the stuff to try it.

Most of you know I am a die hard walleye guy. I am blessed with having fantastic fishing in Lake Erie. My best friend Frank and I chase monster walleyes after dark spending countless hrs on the water after dark. A well known sports writer for the Cleveland Plain Dealer wanted to do an article on Cleveland walleye fishing and asked us to be in the article. We took him out on a windy night with tough conditions. The first walleye we landed was a hair over ten pounds and caught a couple others before the conditions got too tough. Kinda cool doing the story. Here is a link to my minute to our minute of fame! LOL

http://www.cleveland.com/outdoors/index.ssf/2013/05/murphy_snow_hav...

Any how getting back to the point of this post. Frank and I have always thought that our biggest walleye would come after dark one fall night. We have caught 12 pound fish but always had on our bucket list a fish in the 13 to 14 pound range. In march we decided to go fish the Lake Erie Islands. It was a beautiful day and we caught some nice fish. Frank was setting out a line on his side when a monster hit. He got it to the boat I netted an incredible fish. The fish was 30" long and had a 26" girth. The weighed in at 15.25 pounds!!!! So much for the 13 - 14 pound range. LOL

Seeing I had been playing with making fish replica's and had not completed one up that point I decided to give it a try on his fish. I took a bed of sand and prepped the fish to make a casting. Here are some pics of the process.

I completed the mold and cast a body out of fiderglass resin and fiberglass clothe from wally world. I next started the body prep and paint process.

Demold and cut the mouth out fill the body with expandable foam. Two part taxidermy putty to remove the mold seam. After primer coat a light coat of black paint with steel wool to show scale head details. Then the process of the layering of paint.

Towards the end the finer details and teeth. I am happy how it came out for my first one. I gave it to him before we went out fishing one night a couple of weeks ago. We ended up catching an 11.9 pounder that night that is leading the Spring Brawl derby. LOL

Most of you know I am super crazy about walleye fishing. I love this time of year when the migrating walleyes start to put the feed bags on and hit larger baits. A nice change from dragging worms all summer! Here are some baits baits I made for my tackle box for the Fall season. I got to run some of them last weekend.

About 2 years ago, I started making lures the same day I saw your lures for the first time.. Inspirational work!

Thanks Marling,
You have really come a long way with your baits! Nice job.

I am just amazed at the size of musky's that people catch on this site. I keep waiting to get bit by the musky bug but for now I am still under the walleye spell.

Swim baits... I finally got to play with making some and have a new respect for the guys that make them. I wanted to make some to try for my night bite walleyes. Many times while netting the fish they would spit up 4" shad, so I traced one and tried to make a swim bait. I wanted to keep it under a 1/2" thick. So after throwing away 6 bodies with weight holes drilled in every direction I managed to complete two for my tackle box. I wanted to try some micro fiber on some fins but didn't know where to find it so I used paint brush fibers.

Later in the fall as the shad bunch up and move tight to the shoreline the walleyes will come in from open water and feed. We figured if we got between the incoming walleyes and bait we may have a chance to catch one on a swim bait. We had one heck of an incredible night with some really nice fish. The largest fish was 12. 8 pounds with 5 other fish in the 11.10 to 11.5 pound range. To my surprise we caught 3 of the 11 pound range fish on the two swim baits. We also caught 5 others that in the 7 to 8 pound range. Some of the other fish were caught on rapala products that night. We had a double were the fish were 11.1 and 11.25 pounds. It was a super special night for big fish. I have never experienced anything like that before. We released all the fish to fight another day. We did keep the big one hostage for a while in the livewell to see if she would go over 13 pounds on stable ground. We released her at the boat ramp. Here are a couple pics from that night two weeks ago.

I want to wish everyone a merry and safe holiday season along with a happy new year to you and your family's.
John

We released her at ramp 12. 8 pounds . We thought she may hit 13 on stable ground.

We released her after checking her on solid ground. We thought she may hit the 13 pound mark but fell short at 12.8 pounds.

I have been always interested in the fish spearing decoy's. The skilled carvers that out there is just amazing. After watching every video out there on swimming actions , construction, and how they are used I finally gave them a try.

The first one I made was a tiger musky out of cedar.

#2 was a perch that took forever. LOL I have never really chisel carved fine details before and made it thru without a trip to the hospital. I had the chisel slip a couple of times and just missed the wrist.

Here is a video I did of it swimming underwater.

A black crappie carved out of cedar. Experimented with wood burning some scales and carving combined.
