| LOL................ Duff takes such abuse. I felt bad when I got the email so late. If you hang down there for another 3 months you can catch some of the browns games and thenBIG walleyes will move in after dark along the Cleveland shoreline around that time. Duff our Indians are hanging around. They slipped a couple of games back out of first place. The rumors are they may make a trade with the Mets for an outfielder. The Lake county Indians farm team named themselves after the famous Captian Bigfish / first base bag.......... They are called the Lake County Captains. Duff I would be honored! The Browns........ I actually passed the training facility yesterday to a jobsite. Looks like they are scrambling to get things ready for the players arriving Friday I think will be able to take on the Steelers now that Big Ben got married this week. No more wild nights out on the town. Look what happened to Tiger Woods after the wild late night fun ended. LOL I have some really cool ones that I finished last night. I took some fish apart completely and re-assembled on wood. The face plates and everything. I will take some pics when I get home later. Thanks for the kind words everyone. John | |||

Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | Pikie, I know your right but the truth hurts too much for me! We need some receivers and an outside pass rush. We are still in that 8 year rebuilding phase. I think it's starting to turn the corner. Duff our indians got no hit today!!!!!!!!!!! I am getting worried. Well here are some of the newer ones I just finished. I ended up taking the white perch and the bluegill and cutting the face plates off the fish and placing them back in place over the wood after I preserved them. I also did a walleye blade with the white perch skin. Now I won't be so mad when the white perch and junk fish our cleaning the worms off my harnesses. They better not get hooked or they will end up like this one! The big perch is a twitch / casting bait. The skin had nice colors after the drying. I have not tried a yellow perch face plate yet. Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | Hey everyone I hope you all have a great Labor day weekend! Well I got to try out those perch skin blades the last month. It is still a little early for that bite. It really clicks in the next couple of weeks when the big fish move into the perch packs for the fall feed bag bite. I tried the double willow harness and all I kept getting were MONSTER sheephead! I decided to try a single blade only and ended up catching this nice 9.1 pounder a couple weeks ago. Tomorrow I will test the crankbait bite to see if that is starting to fire up. I included a picture of a 8 pound fish I released. That day the fish were on. I ended up 17 fish by myself with two rods. I was catching and releasing after I had the limit in the cooler. You can see the fish swim back down to the 60 foot mark. All worm harnesses. I did also try some white perch skins on some blades also. I will run those tomorrow as well. I now have a use for those little bait snatchers! Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | Here is another perch fish skin I just completed. It is a 6" mahogany body with yellow perch skin over it. I cut the perch head off , cleaned it out and applied it over the front of the lure. It took 7 coats of epoxy to get it to smooth out. | oh man i have to say you have some incredible patience, i tryed to add the perch face plate parts to a jerkbait i was wanting to test for a fish skin lure thing, but i just cant figure out how to make it sit well on it. oh well, just the skin on the bait will look pretty wicked i think, once i get around in finishing it | |||

Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | Rod I did try on that one to highlite the skin with a little paint. I frosted the side with thinned down enamels 50/50 naptha. I added some yellow, green and black. I then very very lightly sanded the skin with 320 grit to clean off the top of the scales. Solarfall, I found that I have to cut away the body where the face plate will sit. I do this after one coat of epoxy is on the bait. I scoop it out with the bandsaw . I will take 5 minute epoxy to glue it on. It then took me 4 more coats of epoxy to smooth it out for detail painting. Well got to go out for walleyes and perch yesterday on Lake Erie. This time of year it is hit or miss on the eastern side of Ohio waters. The big fish are moving thru from New York and Pa waters. They are heading back to the western side for the winter stay over. Most people start to fish for the big perch that are moving into the shoreline from deep waters and the fishing can be very good. Most people stop fishing the walleyes and stock up on the perch. This makes it hard for good reports on walleye GPS numbers. My friend Bernie and I headed up for some perch and then to take a stab at some walleyes maybe. It all worked out! We got our limit of 60 perch and then headed out to 75 foot of water and found a small pod of big walleyes that were active. We caught our limit of walleyes also ( 12 total). I got to catch some of them on my homemade baits. Two fish came on the cedar smelt crankbait that I finished a couple of weeks ago. The other came on some inline hard bodies that slip on a worm harness like the beads do. The biggest fish was 8-1/2 pounds and 5 others were over 7-1/4 pounds. The fish were 60 foot down. We ran some wire line and got the worm harnesses down with 4 oz inline weights on 10 pound mono. Bernie caught a 14-1/2" perch!!!!!!! The biggest one that I have seen in person. Here are some pics!

Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | Happy New Year everyone! May 2012 be good one to you and your families! Man you guys have been making some great lures! Incredible stuff!!!!!!! Well as most of you know I loco crazy for walleye fishing. I wait all year for the fall night bite that happens right out front of downtown Cleveland. The big walleyes come to the shoreline to feed on smelt and shad before the long winter sets in. The prime fishing happens with the water temp is between 50 and 40 degree's. You slow the boat way down to 1.3 to .9 mph. You try to position yourself between the main school of bait and the incoming walleyes. The fish will come in waves and they fill their stomachs fast. The fish at times will become sensitive to motor sounds and running the electric can be an advantage not to spook the fish. The neat thing about making lures is that you can "match the hatch" At the start of the season the fish were loaded up with baitfish in their stomachs and it gave me the chance to match some lures to the fish in their belly's. There was a relationship for a while on larger fish having larger shad and smaller fish having smaller shads in their stomachs. I ended up tracing the body shapes of the dead shad and making some lure bodies. Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | Started running them after the final paint and was really happy with the results. The large green shad took 3 fish over ten pounds but none were over 11 pounds. The mid size shad took one over ten and was the king of 9 pounders. Not sure if this was the size of relationship thing but has caught my attention for next years experiment. Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | As the water approached the lower 40 degree range the fish started to hit a bait I made years ago called "Tony the tiger" It was a cherry bodied bait that caught many fish over the last 3 years, 5 over 11 pounds! I decided to retire it last year. I wanted to try to make another one but was afraid to try thinking the mojo might be there again. Well to my suprise it did. The lure acts more like a swimbait in its action. It has that crippled fish action while trolling at a slow speed. It is painted in a perch pattern but the large fish seem to like it in the shad schools. Not sure if they think it is a perch or a shad. It had one night were it took 4 fish over ten pounds and one at 11.75 pounds and took 2nd place in a "Fall Brawl" walleye tournemant we were in. Some one pinch me! It was for sure a special night. The 5 top fish weighed just over 55 pounds. Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | It was a great fall for the homemade baits. I really enjoyed running them with Frank and Ron. I always feel funny about running them with friends. I always feel if they are not biting it is because I have my lures on. They just kept picking lures out of my box and running them. Thanks guys. I got to run some others I had. I made this redwood bodies smelt with mylar foil on its side. It ended up catching a 10.4 pounder in late december on another nice night feeding fish. If I look strung out in the photo. I am on the right ......I was! LOL I fished 5 out of 6 nights. Average sleep per night 2 hrs. It was worth it!
