Location: Walker, MN | I've always wondered if anyone has really tried to catch and keep ciscoes or whitefish alive in colder water? In the southern states some will use 100 gallon bait tanks infused with O2 just to keep a few Skipjack Herring alive for Striper fishing etc. I once saw an IGFA line class record pike from Europe was caught on a "live whitefish". I doubt I'd ever try, but has been a curiosity of mine for a while. Are they hard to keep alive, or just plain impossible? |

FYI - Cdn Side of LOTW - don't know about Minny LOTW. Buff Bay in Mb I think follows Ontario lead for LOTW.
- Non-Canadians cannot capture their own bait (dead or alive).
- Canadians can only use two methods to capture their own bait - neither of which is angling (dip net or minnow trap).
- Cisco are a baitfish, whitefish are not.
- Basically this means that pretty much would need to purchase live ciscoes (with the paperwork) in order to be legal unless you are a Canadian and know where to dip them.
They are not hardy in event and probably better off just jigging artificial.
Overall bait use and restrictions are something the COs take quite seriously. In Manitoba we are moving to no live baitfish given the issues with introductions.

why not try saltwater dead fish (herring, sardines, mackerel, mackerel).
In England and throughout Northern Europe it is a widely used fishing system(works great !!!).
You catch giant pike fish and it will work for muskies too !!!
The system is called dead-bait fishing and is especially used in cold weather: late autumn / mid-winter.
With large syringes they fire, under the skin of the dead bait fish, herring, sardine, salmon or crab oils to attract the pike (it also works well with walleye, with smaller baits).
On youtube it is full of videos that explain and teach this type of fishing.
