It's looking dicey for ice out for the general opener up here. It actually snowed again last night. We have a couple warm days on tap then back to below freezing at night running into opener week. What say you?

Looking out my window, I think it will be close. Couple weeks ago, I picked April 30 for ice out on the lake where I live at the bar on the same lake. Not looking promising at this point but, if we get some warm weather with all the remaining snow, we could get a good push from the three creeks that feed the chain. The run off and the resulting flow in the creeks means as much as warm weather.

Doesn't look good. Another blow for those businesses that rely on tourism.
The N opener as lost a lot of luster in the past 10 years or so. Used to be steady stream of boats heading north on the Friday before opener. Not so much anymore.

Couple years ago, we had more boats on the chain where I live than normal for the opener. We are a few miles east of Rhinelander and I was told at the landing a lot of the lakes north of us were iced in yet. I was working as a volunteer for Clean Boats/Clean Water and talked to two guys who had planned on fishing further north but couldn't due to ice. They were just happy to find open water. That year ice out on our lake was May 3, couple days before opener.

What is the ice depth in Vilas county? I've heard around twenty inches, is the ice rotten yet?

Our crime may scare off the tourists and our governors may have their own penitentiary wing but fishing is still better than chaining myself to the desk

I drove across Wisconsin on highway 8, today. Didn't see any ice covered lakes until just west of Rhinelander. From there, east, lakes were ice covered until I got about 30 miles from the Michigan border. Most of the ice looked pretty mushy, but there were a couple, that looked like they were going to be a while before they open up.

We’re pretty concerned our lakes won’t be open for the walleye opener may 14th! We’ve seen it before but it’s not common.

Climate change. My sister in SE Alaska has tulips that blossomed almost two weeks ago. They are worried because living off grid, a lot of their water comes from snow melt and the mountain behind them had little snow this winter. And what it had is already melting, where it used to stay until mid July.

I can tell you guy's up North are getting hammered because everything has gone North of me here in the front range, it misses me but get wind and wind and more wind it's been in the 80's the last two day's but cooling to the 50's this weekend. After a real dry fall we got a snow storm every week from late Dec. on then April nothing I got 17 drops of rain all month. The driest April since 1963 everyday there's a fire somewhere in the mountains or on the plains. My neighbor told me "I didn't know we lived in Wyoming"!

Given how much has changed on the lake where I live in the last 24 hours, I feel pretty sure the ice will be gone by the end of the month. Really getting rotten, opening up along the shoreline and channel has widened a lot.

Over here in Washburn/Burnette/Sawyer all our flowing water has been open for awhile, nothings moved out of the lakes into em yet but I still like to jump in and pretend. A few of our heavily spring fed lakes are 40-60% open. Most other bodies have open edges. We've got some defaults if need be.

On Thursday, Silver Lake and Wabikon Lake(between Leona and Crandon), looked soft, but were still white, and locked in shore to shore. When going back to Minnesota today, I noticed they were both dark gray, and ringed with water. The sun was shining, and a warm wind was blasting up from the south. The lakes glistened like they were covered with diamonds. Definitely doing some damage. Should ice out soon.

The big winds made a difference, we'll see where there's an ice line opening day, if there is.

Lake I am on is almost ice free today. As Steve said, the wind did a number on it. Across the lake, what ice is left is piled against the north shore. Migrating ducks are suddenly everywhere

The wind can really suck EXCEPT when you need ice to be removed. (nothing like high sun angle and lots of wind)
My grandparents used to say it was always nicer up north in May then June.

Every year for walleye opener I go to lake vermilion although I’m really doubtful it’s going to be thawed out. I heard a report that on Saturday there was still 40” of ice on a Ely area lake. Doubt vermilions that bad but it looks like I might be fishing around home or heading down to Iowa to musky fish
