| I think this has been discussed but could not find in search. I have a 7'6" jerkbait rod that I really like for working dive/rise and gliders but it's handle is a few inches shorter than all my other rods and always feels a little off when casting. Is there a way of adding a few inches to the cork handle? When the long handles become the norm on musky rods, I was a little skeptical, now I don't want anything else. |

| 1. Cut off the end cap of the rod. Sand the inside of the blank to assure a good bond.
2.Use a piece of either old rod or oak dowel, fitting it to the size of the inside of the exposed rod blank...extend about 4-5" inside the blank.
3.Epoxy in place, let it set up.
4. Add cork rings building it to the required length.
5. Cut off excess and sand cork to your desired shape.
6. Add new end cap to finish.
5 minute epoxy works just fine |

Location: Western U.P. | No8 - As a rod builder, I WOULD NOT recommend using a wooden dowel for a butt extension. At minimum, I would use a thick wall pc of graphite rod blank that fits close or snug, and extends at least 6"-8" up into the rod blank. For a heavy use rod, I might even go with doubling up the extension (a pc of graphite inside another pc of graphite for the extension pc). If you live in the Rhinelander/Eagle River area, I might be able to help you out with an extension pc if you don't have a good one. I'll be traveling down that way at least a couple of times within the next month or 2, and could meet. PM me if you'd want to meet up, or have any questions. |

Thanks, appreciate the generous offer of help. I am going to only add between 2 and 3 inches to the butt, think an oak dowel will be OK for that. |

| x 2 on Thorne. Had extension done to at least 5 rods. All turned out well and were solid. Even adding a couple inches to pounder rods held up |

Location: West Central WI | I'm also a rod builder - mainly muskie rods, and I must respectfully disagree with Cedar. By using an oak dowel, not only is it possible, but works well. I have extended a couple of mine and used for a few years. They have worked well with zero problems. Having said that, I would limit the extension to 6" or less due to the amount of torque used on a cast. Personally, I use an extreme amount of torque on my casts so I'm saying from experience. After 6", what Cedar said is probably better. The directions by bturg are spot on as far as procedures. PM me if you need photos. I have photos of one of my extensions while in progress. |

| I suggest, since you'll be adding cork to the extension anyway, to remove some cork from the end of you rod blank.
Then wrapping it for 1/4" - 1/2" to prevent the end from splitting from torque from the extension.
Been there done that. |

With the season starting in a week, finally got around to doing this. Added five inches so that it is same as other rods, ended up using 1/2 inch dowel. I did not like the look of the addition, cork was very different color, but it was quite solid. Bought some shrink wrap rod grip and applied. Looks and feels good. Thanks again for the help. |

I have an old rod but not the right diameter. The 1/2" oak dowel was slightly small, so I cut some strips of mesh fiberglass drywall tape, adhered to the dowel, then loaded that with 2 part epoxy for a good tight fit in the handle. I like the balance now so it worked out. Tossed a jerk bait off the dock since it is a 7.5' rod I use for jerks/wtds and it felt really good. |
