I find myself throwing depth raiders, Mepps double blade, top raiders kind of lures a lot.
Recommendations on a reel maybe $ 300.00 to $ 700.00ish kind of range please?
Thanks

I use an AbuGarcia 6500 for those kind of baits, I think they run abt a hundred and a half now.
I get them serviced every year and most are over 10 years old. m

You're pretty flexible on the price point so pick a flavor and roll with it. It is nearing the end of the season for the Midwest. Might not hurt to wait it out, check some reels out at shows over the winter. I bring this up as the new Daiwa reel is interesting, but I'm curious to see what people see when they maintain them this winter after a full year's use. If you need to pick something up soon, I would agree on the Tranx 400.

Not to detract from the other reels recommended, but the Revo Toro Beast would be worth considering.

Caught my first Muskie on old Ambassadeur 5000 (the old red one)still have it but worn out. I do have a 5500C from 1979 that still works and have it on a jig rod. I also have two 7000 C3's from the early 90's but they are heavy and have alot of play in the gearing and only pick up 24 inches per crank. I do have a Ambassdeur Morrum 5600 and 6600 these reels are no longer made but had nice tight gearing. Ambassdeur lost me the early 90's when I had 6000 C and 6500 C3 plain wear out from throwing Suick's, Reef Hawg's, Depth Raider's and Rizzotails ? Shimano Calcutta 400 B served me well for many years and put a power handle on one of them! Still have these reels and need to have service done and parts replaced and will make for good back up's. I have a Tranx 500 PG for the big stuff also Tranx 400 (A power handle will be added before spring) and couple System 13 A 3's for small to regular sized stuff. Right after I bought the second 400 B the Shimano TE came out so I never got to fish with it and it's off the market!

If you're handy consider the Ambassadors. They continue to be world-wide popular and because they're a favorite of long-distance casting guys there are lots of cool, high-quality parts available. With the free exploded diagrams available on the Garcia website anyone can (carefully) disassemble, clean, lube, replace parts, upgrade parts and even add parts that were not originally in the reel.

If you go this route, consider buying used reels at flea markets. Look for the ones that show two particular tells - the line is stacked to one side of the spool and the reel handle is not bent. If the reel handle isn't bent there may be very few hours on the reel. If the line is stacked on one side of the spool, then the pawl is worn down. (Pawls are usually the first part to wear out.) Combine the two and the reel may well have been put up in frustration, due to bird nests created by the stacked line, by the original owner. Good chance the reel is otherwise in terrific condition.

There's nothing like the confidence that comes with starting a long season with reels in which you have absolute confidence because you cleaned, lubed and rebuilt them over the winter.

Ps - thumb bar reels are nice but in really cold weather they will always freeze up way before push button reels.

In the late 70's I had relative who lost a big Musky and went out a bought a Heddon Musky special Rod with a Ambassadeur 6000 C. Beautiful reel gloss black with deal spool control he never used it I tried to buy it from him. Not for the rod but for the reel. I did not have the money to buy a new one at the time I was only 15 years old.

Tranx 400 5.8 with the power handle from the HG is the best for what you’re asking.

The best? Maybe. Better than the Beast, Pro rex or Lexas, Komodos? I agree with Fly Piker. Go to the shows and put those reels in your hands and figure out what is right for you. You committed to spending big bucks so be patient . Kdawg
