I've finally gotten into some tying. Mostly streamers for spinners and crappie jigs. I had a question about chenille and other supplies. Has anyone gone to the big chain craft stores and bought stuff? I just bought a giant skein of black velvet yarn but it's just like chenille. Why would that not work just as well? Practically a lifetime supply for a 100th of what it would cost to buy as fishing material. They don't have the cool fisherman catching colors and size ranges but basics for peanuts.

I have found the same with beads for making bucktails. From solid heavy strong beads to plastic ones pennies compared to buying from a whosale supplier.

Todd,
Most tiers look for opportunities to get materials and frequent craft stores. You can get significant amounts of materials for an economical price. The only thing is, will these materials perform for you. I would say find them, use them, and enjoy the savings.

If they work for you use em. I've never known a fish to check the brand name before committing to a bait. We tie 3/4 oz jigs for walleye at 35 cents a piece vs the $3.29 they cost retail. They catch as many fish as the branded ones. Oh ya and on any trip 8 to 10 will be lost. $3.50 lost vs 32.90 plus tax. Use em!!!

Can be done. You'll have to play around though, some of the really cheap product will hold water, or mold, or color will wash out. I got burned a few times, and realized I don't really tie enough to warrant the few bucks here and there.

I've found some interesting colors of "craft fur", and other useable stuff at Hobby Lobby at prices that would only add a few cents to the cost of a jig, or a fly. The fish don't seem to mind.

Someone mentioned it above, but I've had issues with colors washing out when using hobby store type materials.

But for smaller crappie, walleye jigs, may not be an issue. My experience is using hackle and marabou for blades.
