My research indicates LOTW water levels as of 8/10/21 are at the lowest level since 1961.
And folks at Eagle say its very low there as well.
If so does anyone have any intuitions on how that might effect how fish use traditional structure areas?
Not sure how that impacts algae blooms as too....
Thanks

Sounds like a great time to mark all those underwater hazards that aren't underwater anymore!

My advice to anyone fishing any Canadian shield lake this year, but any year too, is to ease in and out of spots. Idle in and out. You'll waste a minute of your time but save your lower unit. Slow down and take corners wide.

LOTWs is very low.Even if you've been going there for years rethink your routes and consider all your personal 'shortcuts' carefully.Suspect you'll find some that are no longer safe.If your units have the water or depth offset feature reduce the level by 3 feet.Afterwards if the units have color shading set them so say anything shallower than 5 feet is in red.Look around, suspect even if you've been on the lake 50 yrs you'll see some surprises.
In just the past week I'm aware of a 'totalled' boat and motor,2 lower units and a number of destroyed props. The fishing is great but think safety.

That sounds like good advice Dick, I’m heading up to stay at Frank’s for a week.
Just changed my water level offset to -3 feet

Good plan and good luck to you.Fishing was great, now good.'Think' cool down.Sunny 90s are hard on everyone and certainly senior citizens.

Thanks for the tip on changing your water level setting.......hopefully I can figure out how to do. How passable is the French Portage Narrows with this low water level? Going up after work tomorrow, crossing at Baudette early Sat morning and staying at a cabin NE of Oak.

This has always been my approach on LOTW. Great advice. The -3 foot offset is another great idea, thanks DP. I was trying to interpret how low it is from mean pool and I was figuring between 2.5-3 foot. We are heading in on the 28th to an area I have not spent a lot time at. Be safe everyone.

I have not been through French Portage but a Canadian friend has been going through often and says it's very low and he trims up and goes slowly.

Thanks for the info DP. It sounds like we will be tilting up and going slow in a lot of places.

I heard from an extremely good source. deduct 11/2 to 2 feet off Navionics chart depths.

Just got back home. Got thru French Narrows just fine going slow and trimmed up. Good fishing for all species. Came close to running over a swimming bear late one night. Thought it was a log at first.
