Posts: 56 | Hi all, I'm coming up 1st week of Sept. 2021 never fished LOTW. Staying at Obabikon Camp. North West Sabaskong bay near. Miles Bay near. Obabikon lake near. Burrow Bay near. Thinking its a once in a lifetime opportunity to fish Muskie that have seen many lures In a year and a half.... Any recommendations on "community spots" that haven't been touched ? Lures that time of year. ect. Thanks for any input.

Posts: 1964 | Plenty of nice people that live in Canada have been fishing the muskie lakes daily, l’ve had several people talk to me about how great the fishing in Canada is gonna be… I wouldn’t count on it….imo, it’s gonna be muskie fishing and fishing will be very similar to as it was two years ago… which is good fishing, but really helps to know the lakes you’ll be on.. and many first timers struggle, everything is going to look fishable. I’d look at maps and pick a roughly 3 mile by 3 mile section and learn it… don’t be afraid to fish spots that really look good multiple times in a day. Hard to argue throw blades as you attempt to develop a milk run of spots you want to hit throughout the week..But I personally like throwing a depth raider on rock spots I’ve never fished… banging rocks can be a really effective technique mid day, go back and hit the high spots of rock bars with topwater in the evening. You’ll want to check weed spots near deeper water to, generally get a push of fish back into weeds… but as always weather will play a big factor… I’ve fished when it’s 40 or 85 that time of year…Good luck Edited by IAJustin 8/8/2021 8:22 AM

Rock reefs, shoreline, beaches, they all have fish. And I agree they’ll be hungry but the august crowd will teach them a lesson first.

Posts: 1964 | Original post, welcome by the way! I’d fish straight west of your camp and if comfortable going as far west as Rubber island and make a milk run of spots between camp and there… that’s what I’d do but there are fish in all directions… There’s gonna be a lot of fisherman wondering why the muskies aren’t just jumping in the boat in August on every spot, they won’t be any more hungry, pretty sure less fishermen didn’t change the amount of forage in the lake. It is an any cast lake for sure, pick an island out in the basin and fish around it , never a bad idea.. some the bigger ones could take half the day - ha!… lots of broken rock/ boulders, stuff you’d think smallies would like in June are often good islands to fish around most of these also have pockets of weeds.

Posts: 59 | Ill agree that I don't think the muskys got as big of break up here as some people think. On lotw and minaki I've saw alot of guys chucking baits. And communiy spots still get hit hard. Sab Bay may be a bit different tho. I fish lotw out of kenora.

Posts: 56 | One thing I have learned very quickly, catching up on 25 yrs. of innovations in muskie lures is one expensive game. My wife gonna kill me, I'll have to hide in Canada till spring.

I would say a bit rich to ask for spots, but first post and not having fished for them for a while, perhaps forgiveable - the lodge will give you all the help you need.

I would make sure you have a propbait…topraider , fat bastard or Lee lures water chopper… if conditions line up and throw enough high probability of putting a nice fish in the net.

Posts: 56 | Sorry Angling Oracle, that was dumb to ask for spots. Should have said more like "general areas" Thanks IA Justin, I'm afraid I already went over board lol. Were going to Eagle lake for a few days too, trying to cover all possible scenarios..

Seriously, he asked for community spots, not your favorite secret spots. Geez. Then to say he would be foolish not to get a guide is somewhat insulting as well. I have nothing against guides, but some of us like the challenge of figuring stuff out. Doing map sessions, picking peoples brains, etc.. are all good ways to have a starting point. Mr. Worrall is notorious for marking maps up for folks. Some people enjoy helping others be successful.

A jerkbait like a suick. You can cover the bases with those lures. You can use 8 Colorado blades just fine or 10's if you prefer. This time of year the nights can cool off and a major cold front can push temps down into the 40's. Not often but can. Make sure you bring warm clothes along with your summer ensembles. Location: Athens, Ohio | What Todd said. It will all look good when you get there, find bays with points and complexzes (weed/rock/sand), throw bucktails and topwaters, you'll have a blast. m

Posts: 56 | Hello MuskySaloon, I am one of those who try's to figure it out myself. I have been spending time with the Navionics charts of the area for the last month. What's strikes me most is there are so many many "good looking spots" in that general area it makes my head spin 360 degrees. I have learned not all spots that look good enough to eat yield. Probably he best question to pose is actually, what do the "unproductive spots", that only look good on paper, have in common. A lesson in where not to fish is just as valuable. And yes I do have a "guide" the 1st day, I don't know who it is yet..... But I will bet the collective wisdom of those who post on this forum exceeds the knowledge of any single person.

Posts: 357 | dont fall into the biggest lotw trap there is...being overwhelmed by its size. everyday of the season there are fish on every structure. obviously sometimes more on some that others. just go fishing and work out a pattern you like. any easy way to start is take a hydro map and hold it at least out at arms length and circle some spots. each day fish one saddle, one reef, one point, and one bay to start. then adjust from there. if you had only 1 bucktail or spinnerbait, one prop top water, 1 suick and one minnow bait lures will not be an issue.

Posts: 20173 Location: oswego, il | One other thing. Find the areas with the least or not algae bloom. The wind will dictate where it goes. It changes one day an area can be clear and pea soup if the wind direction changes and brings it in. find the clean areas and fish spots there.

Location: Athens, Ohio | But...don't let the green water scare ya. There's fish in it, too; perhaps not so many, just hard to see until they smack your bait mid-8. And, take some time to enjoy the sunsets, the eagles, and the big birds on the white rocks. When we found an area with birds on stinky rocks, we knew it hadn't been fished in a while and may need a look-see..m https://muskie.outdoorsfirst.com/board/photos/show-album.asp?albumid... Posts: 56 | Thanks to all who have posted. The guidance has helped me sort out and get properly focused on combating the overwhelming nature of LOTW ( lake of 10,000 good looking spots...) I have routed 3 potential "milk runs" to make., and intend to focus on those to implement on my upcoming trip. Thanks again, -mike

Posts: 335 Location: Minnesota | From what I saw this past week, there aren't any untouched spots anymore. The Canadians were out musky fishing the whole time although there aren't nearly as many of them - they were out there on all the community spots for sure. I heard of one local who was having some huge numbers days last summer and so far this summer. He still had his share of bad days too. On Friday - it seemed like there were boats everywhere chucking baits. I went to a different area on Saturday and didn't see as many boats so you can still get away from people if you want. That being said - LOTW was my favorite musky lake before Covid and it certainly hasn't changed since then. You will have a blast and there are plenty of fish to chase out there. Go hit the spots that look good. If you see rocks sticking out of the water or just below the surface, chances are it's a decent spot. Go try it - if you like it fish it again later just to make sure. If not - move on to the next one as there won't be enough time to fish them all. You have a bunch of spots within sight of the resort to find fish on. Good luck!

Posts: 56 | Frankly it seems quite inhospitable , and somewhat unfair for our Canadian friends, our "neighbors to the north", to take advantage of our forced absence and to chuck lures into our community spots .... Edited by pickolish1 8/17/2021 11:28 AM

Posts: 32759 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | On many trips to that area over the years one of the biggest producers for us has been larger bass size crankbaits pitched at large busted rock cracks in rock walls, points, obvious sudden changes in rock structure, etc. I remember one trip my son's boat had a dozen before I had one until I tied on a small crankbait. Make sure the hooks are good, change them out if too small or weak.

Posts: 1152 | Only there once in sept. 93 heavy bloom in Sabaskong Bay , big fish spotted in Turtle lake caught fish in Burrow Bay and the biggest fish from our group caught in the clear water of Whitefish Bay. Weather was in the upper 30's and drizzle all week last day sunny warmed up saw a bunch of fish and lost two in on the last half day. My best lures Chartreuse six inch Reef Hawg and Chartreuse Wt. Suick. (9 inchers back in 1993).

Posts: 512 | just got back sunday from a week up there, weather and wind kept us on shore more than i wouldve liked, but the few times we got out the skis were trying to bite when we could find em. bloom was pretty bad and i think that had a little to do with it unfortunately. however the walleye fishing was the best we ever encountered though! all in all was great to get back up there was even more beautiful then i remember! let us know how you did!
