Posts: 1516 | Do you update the software in your locators? Seems like a hassle is it worth the effort?

Posts: 60 | I suggest to save your waypoints data first on a different card. I have a new unit and tried the update via bluetooth from the Humminbird Fish Smart app, and the app did not play well with my Helix 10 G4N. Went back to the SD card method and it worked well, and fast.

Posts: 20178 Location: oswego, il | Mine are Lowrance and I did it with an SD card. Downloaded from the website put it on the card, placed the card in the map slot and turned on the unit. It prompts you from there. If you have an older lowrance you need an SD card 1 gig or smaller which means you will have to buy one online, they don't sell them that small anymore in stores. Posts: 1675 Location: Mt. Zion, IL | If you have lowrance, the factory recommends saving settings and waypoints before updating. Then perform the update. After updating, perform a hard reset, then load settings and waypoints. This is the factory recommended procedure from several calls with Lowrance 2nd tier support.

Posts: 408 Location: MN | I have done it with Garmins using SD card. Very straightforward - just followed instructions and everything worked as it should. I had to do it to recognize a newer transducer. I probably wouldn't do it mid-season unless necessary just in case you have issues - seems like a good item to check off when you take the boat out in spring.

Posts: 1209 | I only updated when I had an issue that would be resolved by the update or a feature I desired was added. Why update to simply update. If you have no issues why ask for them?

Posts: 359 Location: SW Ohio | Some updates are worth the trouble but others cause more issues than they fix. Especially on Humminbirds. Seems as though the updates aren't checked for other issues they cause before they are released. There's a good website with lots of info on updates. The brands have their own forum and the update info is usually listed at the top. I always check here to see if there area any downsides before I do any update. Some updates have bricked head units that require them to be sent back to the factory. http://www.bbcboards.net/forum.php
