When you are on a fishing trip where do you like to eat while there or to and from? Any little hole the wall places?

In Mercer, Johnny's Bar and Heart of the North have good burgers. Around the Corner Pub has good Old Fashions and a good pizza. The bar at the Great Northern Motel has good bar pizza.

Red Granite Bar and grill between Merrill and Wausau has incredible breaded to order chicken strips and a tall glass old fashion even though it's squirt bottle it's pretty good.

Barbee Motel on the barber chain has awesome pizza and the upstairs bar is a fun hangout.

In Belle River if Ziggies gets rebuilt after the fire a great small place as well. If you order a captain and coke in Canada they have a bacardi style captain you have to specify spiced rum otherwise they will know your an out of country hick.

On the way back from LSC stop at Schuler's in Marshall Michigan. Prime rib sandwich is sick. It will become a regular stop if you do.

I don't really travel to fish, but here is a couple of places in Ashland I would recommend if people are passing through.

El Dorado. Mexican (obviously) restaurant on the way out of town to the west. Hwy 2.

Frankies Pizza. On the east side side of town. Again on Hwy 2.

The Bristol Tap here in fibland is well known for its Burger, if you like them thick you will love that one. In downtown Yorkville there is a little dive Bar called Rowdy's. Well known for their crazy burger combinations including one with peanut butter and jelly.

We always enjoy stopping at the Sawmill Saloon in Virginia MN on the way to Canada. Boathouse in Fox Lake has good pizza and excellent burgers or Hayes on the north side of Fox has great bloodies and the best view on the lake from the deck.

Skyview in Presque Isle does a good job. The grilled pork chop is excellent. If you need to impress the wife Smokey's in Winchester is 5 star, Almost forgot - The Pines in Mercer has excellent German food - Sauerbraten is great, gig burgers all homemade rolls etc. Pines Owner Erv is also an excellent guitarist

From the impoundment, equidistant from Mercer and Ashland, that eats RANGERS etc, (thank God). Eldorado, yes we have one two, could call hombre 14ledo81, just south on our 51, Cajun fish fry at the Pit stop, Pizza at the Iron Nuget and if you get past Silver St.t there is the Burger Bar, on the way to the Gile boat landing, where I recommend their patty melt.

If fishing Boom Lake or Wis. River in the Rhinelander area, two on the water places with docking space are Backwaters Bar & Grill and Flyin Finn. Both are on Hwy 47 north of Rhinelander. Both are run by really nice folks. Backwater is further up the river, Flyin Finn on Boom.

Speaking of on the way to Canada, Main Street Cafe in Bloomer, WI is about right for breakfast for our trip north. The food is great, the people are better. Oh, and the homemade pies are fantastic, offering a treat in the middle of the week at the cabin. And across the street from the cafe in Bloomer, the Bloomer Bakery. No wonder I put on a few lbs. on the Canada trips.

Backwaters on the river on HWY47 used to be awesome about 20 years ago. Went there twice over the last few years and holy heck has that place gone sideways!

New owners took over about 2 years ago. The previous owners had a bunch of issues, including being robbed several times. It was even closed for a short while. Since the new owners took over, been good. Check out the reviews.

My day goes: drive three hrs to West Virginia or northern Ohia, buying pepperoni rolls along the way. Munch lunch in the boat, grab a Wendy's or Subway for the drive home. Not much allowance for casual dining. m

When I was a kid there used to be this bar/restaurant on old 53(before the hwy was built) we used to eat at in one of the town's between Bloomer and Spooner. The place was full of fish mounts. I remember an 8lb brook trout and believe a 38lb pike. Someone said they think it burned down. If that place still exists would be a cool place to go back to.

That probably was the Buckhorn Tavern in Rice Lake, I think it burned down years ago.

I just looked it up and found an image of the bar. That was it. Too bad it burned down there was some big fish mounts in there. There was a dining room full of mounts off from the bar and more fish mounts across from it as well. I was there in the 70's as a kid, it was in color then.

We used to stop at Gordys in Cloquet but it is usually very busy. We decide to drive a couple blocks further north and tried the Family Tradition Restaurant. Indoor & outdoor dining. Great food & friendly staff. Not sure I’ll stop at Grodys again.

Probably doesn't quite fit the hole in the wall title, but any Zorbaz in MN is worth the stop. Great Mexican and drinks, and typically on or near the water. Near some great muskie waters, and even a few up and comers.

I’m not knocking Gordy’s they have good food I think the Family Traditional Restaurant is also good maybe a little diverse menu. Not sure how early they open. Drawn back maybe lack of parking if your towing a boat Anyway a 2 nd option for Cloquet.

You definitely nailed the Mercer cuisine spots! You also have to go to Donners and get the Little Beers. Check out the Sunken Horse for their spicy cheese curds.

+4...for Gordy’s in Cloquet MN.

We stop every time, provided the restaurant is in season (opens March 24th this year). Gordy is still working the counter at 94 years young! The strawberry shake is a ‘must’ to complement a California burger with cheese and ‘the works’. The fries are ‘meh’, but everything else is top shelf.

Fishing in the Vilas/Oneida area Rhinelander cafe and pub in Rhinelander and the Cookery in Sugar camp White Stag also Sugar Camp Honey Bear outside of Eagle River and the Sayner Pub for pizza. The Flair (now closed)outside of St. Germain was a good breakfast lunch place. And as a kid we would take a trip to Three Lakes to the Oneida Village Inn for Sunday brunch and I hear it just burnt down this and couple weeks ago. The Mint bar in Eagle River was a great place for a hamburger up to the 80's (and if you want some old crabby lady to yell at you try ordering a milkshake with your burger) Made it into Barefoot Charlie's by Land O Lake's in he early 80's before it burnt down. Main street cafe in Deer River MN and Sammy's pizza in both Grand Rapids and Cloquet. Gordy's is closed for the year in the fall. (on my bucket list)

If in the Sugar Camp area, Moon Dance Bar and Grill has good food, good drinks and in nice weather you can eat on a large deck overlooking the lake. Really good people run the place, very active in that little community.

Another vote for Gordy's .... Stop there about 20-30 times a year. Blackberry/Raspberry shakes are really good with the double cheeseburger.
The Crescent Bar & Grill on the west end of Vermilion isn't bad for being a hole in the wall. And of course the V.C. Club just down the road from Fortune Bay.
