A solid decade later than the original plans but found a nice deal for an ulterra on Craigslist so I’m finally switching from 12v to 24v. I’ve got a couple of setup questions.

1) planning on getting a 2 bank charger. Can the 2 batteries remain connected in series when charging or should they be disconnected? If they need to be disconnected can put a switch in between the connections?

2) any body have any experience with the Marinco 70a receptacle? Thinking of picking it up from Amazon and using it with some 6 gauge wire.

1, just put the pair of leads on one individual battery each, they can stay hooked up with no problem.

2 should be just fine, and if your the concerned type, unplug this when charging the pair of batteries.

that marinco 70 amp connector is what i use. i disconnect the TM while traveling just as a precaution, and always have the TM unplugged while charging. I have ready too many stories of guys burning up control boards from charging while TM is plugged in while charging to take a chance.

I have a circuit breaker in line with my trolling motor and always turn it off when docking or pulling the boat out of the water. Over time the circuit breaker will go bad and I will have to replace it due to premature tripping. Be wary of a plug that you are always plugging and unplugging. Over time it, too, can become loose and you will have a connection that can cause a voltage drop and heat.

Just a thought on the charger. Why not get a three bank charger, charging the trolling batteries and the starting battery at the same time? When I replaced the factory charger in my older Pro V, that was what I did and it works very well. I live on a small chain of lakes so my big motor doesn't run for that long, and this way I know the starting battery, which also powers my electronics is fully charged as well as trolling.

Was actually thinking about that last night and will probably do that. I fish smaller waters and much less frequently these days so it would be nice to get a 3rd bank.

3 bank charger would be a great idea, I thought you had a single bank or something already. I'm my opinion people should always charge all batteries on a boat.
