Posts: 8 | Okay so most everyone says use slower speed when water is cold and faster when warm, around what temps do you decide to speed up or slow down and what IPT do you prefer for specific seasons?? I know the reels vary greatly from 24” to 40”+ so it seems like a relevant question

Posts: 1199 Location: Walker, MN | When the water is above 70 it's a good idea to try burning smallish blades with the highest speed reel that you have. The fish often prefer bigger blades, and pull-pause baits in the fall when the water is cooler, but you can still use a 30"/turn or faster reel. For instance, I like a Tranx 500HG the whole season for rubber. I rarely see the need for reels slower than 28" per turn, 28"-30" is fine for double tens and even supermodels. Posts: 1969 | the reels I use all year are 30-43" ipt..reel I choose is based on application not time of year, example I like HS reels for rubber any time of year even if I want to fish slow..still want the ability to pickup slack quick...I just pause the bait longer and/or count it down more often late fall...IPT can be an overrated reel metric, example a smaller reel with 80 lb braid might be 30" per crank at full spool but 16" IPT after a bomb cast...If I really want speed, tough to beat a tranx 500.

As far as lures where you need to pick up slack, I have gotten away from the higher speed reels. The jerk or twitch of the rod gives the speed, the slower reel extends the pause which I think causes more strikes. The reel doesn't slow the twitch or the jerk at all.

Posts: 1969 | I'd say even color causes more strikes than a slower speed reel - 1 can pause a bait just as long with any speed reel - that makes no sense!

I will force it with a slower reel. Not all of us can be that special. Edited by ToddM 2/21/2021 3:56 PM

Posts: 1209 | I'll use my fastest ipt reels when the water is the coldest. Jerkbaits as my example fished super slow but why not use an efficient reel for slack line?

Posts: 390 | My rubber rod always has a high speed reel, it hard to keep up and feel strikes on the fall otherwise. I use a low speed for glides and jerks. My blades setup has a more middle speed so I can still crank fast but don't get tired throwing 10s. Not at all temp dependent for me but based on presentation.

Posts: 711 | My peak temp range for burning lures is 63-68. Outside of that I slow down accordingly ...I'm talking blades. I use 500Tranx HS and the same HS in the 400 size tranx. Blades, rubber and really big stuff get the 500. Most everything else gets a 400 size. I don't change ratios preferring to adjust my hand turning speed instead. Keeping Lines per inch consistent helps me be consistent. That's what I do because it works the best for me. Everyone is different, getting advice is fine but experimenting and finding out what works for you is what matters.

Posts: 32785 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | I understand what ToddM is saying, I do the same thing. I have a tough time slowing down enough when needed, so a slower retrieve reel gets it done for me.

Posts: 535 | I just use a high speed reel for pretty much everything anymore. Only time i use a slower one is maybe for a glider or a walk the dog topwater

You can catch them with a cane pole and jig or spoon,,,,,,,,,, zero turns. I like faster gear ratio's, because I'm not pulling double ten's, and I can slow down. Have fun! Al

Posts: 51 | All I have is C3's and C4's 6601s upgraded with ceramic bearings, carbontex drag washers and power handles. They're relatively cheap and easy to fix. This is all I've been fishing with pretty much the last 20 years and they havent given me a reason to want to switch yet.
