What do you guys have for boats? I’m looking at a 2006 Lund 16’ w/76” beam. (Can store a few rods @7.5’) Side console full windshield. Is that enough size for me and my 2 young sons to get started musky fishing? Won’t be fishing on real big water. Or should I not bother with a 16’ and save up for a 17’+? Thanks.

What model is it? Is it tiller or console? tiller usually will give you a little more room. It will likely work with 3 people in the boat. However, the bigger the better.

3 people casting in a 16 foot boat is tough. Especially with kids. If you are fishing smaller water id consider a tiller, you'll appreciate the extra room with 3 people. My guess is after a year in a 16 with 2 growing boys, you'd be looking to go bigger. Id really shoot for an 18 if you got 3 casting

I'm running a 1625 Lund Fury double bubble. It's a two man boat.

It’s a 1625 classic sport. W/full windshield. I haven’t really looked at the tiller option much because I figured full windshield would add more comfort zipping around between spots if it’s cooler. I will take a closer look at that though.

I have a old 17 foot Ranger tiller with an 80” beam. It’s definitely a two person musky boat. Does Ok for three walleye fishing. The tiller gives way more space though in a smaller boat. Personally i would try to go a bit bigger or look hard at a tiller in that size given three anglers. Problem with small tillers is they tend to be a little underpowered so I would max out the motor size in that case

I agree that for three look for an 18' tiller. Even if you have to buy a bit older rig. Sacrificing a little comfort for more room.

One question would be how young your boys are. Young kids tend to get cold easily and a windshield would help with that. My boat is an 18' Pro V tiller and it is great for fishing but no place to get out of the wind.

I have fished 4 in my 14ft princecraft before when my kids were small.it can be done but you will want more room. I looked at that boat the rear deck is narrow for standing unless you build an extension. The real questions are, you looking at used, new and what is your budget? The lund will handle fairly decent sized lakes but you will also appreciate a wider boat.

I ran a 16’ Alumacraft Lunker V tiller with a 25 HP Johnson for 25 yrs. now have a Lund Rebel tiller with a 40 HP. I fish with my 2 son in laws - it’s maybe a little tight but very workable. But having the tiller model is key and I pull out all the seats - plenty of room that way. I don’t see how three could ever all stand and cast from a boat with a full windshield. IMO boats with full windshields are not a good option for fishing ski’s anyway.

Doable but that windshield takes up a lot of space in an already cramped boat. I'd go for a 17.5 minimum.

That's too small of a boat for a full windshield.

A tiller is a good way to go as it creates a lot of room as noted.

For a used side console (I'd avoid a full windshield, the "middle" guy just gets jammed up), I'd look at a 17' Crestliner FishHawk. I believe they have a 91" beam so good stability.

The front deck is large so you and one child could fish from the front deck with the other child fishing from the rear deck.

Im in a 16.5 foot dual console with a 92 inch beam and it's definitely a two man musky rig. Even with three pretty experienced musky sticks in the boat it's too tight. I too would recommend either a bigger option or the tiller as suggested by others.

When my adult sons are with me we muskie fish out of my 16 ft single console Sylvan. We have one rule- everyone casts the same direction and all casting overhead straight on. Only my oldest son in the front will sometimes swing out sidearming it over the bow. I'm in the middle with a knee on one seat. Everyone throwing same direction is the only way to be safe.

It can be done, but just make sure you know how to remove hooks from your or your kids' body.
