Just got back yesterday and nothing going on but the rent. We trolled Sunday, Monday, Tuesday evenings. From about 6 till 9. We weren’t alone at one point we counted 24 boats either casting or trolling. We didn’t have our Minnesota fish finders in the boat, but we didn’t see anyone boat a fish those three nights. Tuesday night we did see some bait fish breaking the surface & Steve from Spring Bay Resort saw a couple porpoise when he was out on Tuesday. The mayfly hatch is getting started in Fraiser Bay if that helps

Yikes. Going to have to go commando this week. I know there is going to be a big warm up. Hopefully that will change things a bit.

The panfish will be working the weed edges and so will some smallmouth and walleyes. Largies will be breaklines, docks and pads, weedless frogs are a blast. Get up in the weedy bays more than most of the other muskie boats. I've see them on my Aqua-Vu in 5 to 6' in the bay backs and tight to shore along the leading breaklines this time of year often.

Vermillion is kicking our &$@. Are there any fish in this place? West end Dead Sea. Weeds are holding nothing. Will try Jamison tonight and sleep on it. Only fish caught in camp is a 46” over the tulibee schools in 40 ft casting. Any other thoughts? Or more Jamison?

My advice would be more Jamison. Kidding. There are fish in the lake, but numbers are pretty low, which can be frustrating. Your saving grace is if you stumble into a feeding window. It doesn’t sound like you’re doing anything wrong. Just keep plugging away in known fishy locations/open water and wait for the switch to flip. If you’re not moving fish in cabbage, don’t get discouraged—they are still there. A 46” is a win! Have a shot in celebration!

We’ve been saying this for years. Very few fish and terrible pressure equals no bites.

The big V is a heartbreaker, beautiful lake, nice resorts, big muskies are there but just like everyone else said, #'s are low, forage very abundant and they can be very finicky and hard to find, beats working though and take advantage of other species, lots of pike over 35" are available

For sure the bite is very fickle. The numbers of fish are way down and pressure is at a high. Delayed mortality is a real thing. Some guy's are catching fish but the bites are fare between.
Hopefully when the 2 year study (now 3 years) will show a very small population of fish and lead to increased stocking numbers. I am not holding my breath on increased stocking numbers- funding is the key factor.
Grind it out and hope the window opens and a giant chooses you. Its not the number of bites that count it is THE BITE.

Good Luck

Steve

I'm finding less and less motivation out there. The only people who are "consistently" catching fish are Livescope users. They can comb the basin with 20 times more efficiency and make probably 5% of the casts a regular guy does. Find a fish, make a few casts, catch it, or move on to the next one.

And yes mortality is very high. Lot's of floaters. Each one counts.

My only advice is don't be afraid to jump in line with all the other boats/guides and bomb baits at tulibee schools in open water. Fishing classic shallow spots will not pay off.

Well the Big V kicked our @$$ this week. With 85-92 degree calm flat days to end the week it proved to be too much. Fished weeds, weed lines, open water over tulibee and rock bars we got zip. Water temps also were prime for a fish boil. Went in to Cook for second bottle of Jamison and pediolyte. Missed LOTW for sure!!!

Also just returned from a week on the V....Three guys fishing, tried everything, no fish....Did have three lazy follows in one spot in the morning.... One of the guides posted a 55" that appeared to be caught just before dark. Fortune Bay Casino and Hotel were busy and need to wear a face mask while inside the common areas. Many of the lakes restaurants had down sized menus and mostly deep fried food and pizzas.... I've never seen so much boat traffic in the 20 years I've been going there....But it is still a great lake and multi species is the way to go now Good luck if you head up!

Well, this is a little discouraging.

A group of five of us are headed up to Vermilion in a little more than a week. We will be staying four nights and fishing long hours in the center and eastern part of the lake.

We have never tried chasing tullibee schools in open water. Any tips on that method of fishing?

That’s basically done around the 4th of July. This is vermilion. Not an easy lake to fish.

The pressure there was high and now is much higher like all MN and WI. Waters these days. Those who remember the discussion on MN Here back when the new stocking had been discovered may remember that this scenario was predicted and completely rejected by most then fishing the 50” big numbers over there. The muskies are not reproducing enough so stocking won’t keep up with the tremendous pressure if it isn’t stepped up. It was, unfortunately, inevitable. Multi species fishing or trophy hunting with reduced Muskie numbers is where things are now with the original fantastic fishery gone forever.

New reservoir syndrome.

I just came back from a month on the V. It was a b-tch to say the least... I found a few nice fish but nary a take. Also I didn't push it to extremes either but the lake is in a severe decline. Same goes for the walleye population from 15 yrs back...

As mentioned I didn't work my tail off but thing shave changed a ton on that lake... We'll still go back b/c we love it but...it'll test a boy's patience!

Came back from a week Saturday. I've only fished Vermilion for 10 years so I can't say I've ever found the lake to be easy. Minnesota is not Canada or even my Iowa stocked lakes, when the window is closed its closed pretty hard. But I guess every time I see a fish so big my stomach flips I plan my next trip. We fished all our good weed and rock spots and didn't move a single fish. We move out to the second deep break started fishing windblown bait and started catching fish. Went 5 for 7 for the week 43, 43.5, 45.5, 47, and 52. With 2 other unseen shaking the hooks. Water Temps started at 77 to 78 fell to 72 to 73 by the time we left. Saw 3 floaters long dead first day, didn't see any later in the week.

I go to mn for a big swing at a home run fish, and I really like spring bay and lake Vermillion. But I go in hoping to scratch out 3 bites. I go to lake of the woods expecting 12 to 20 bites.

Good luck and see you back up there this fall
