| I’m new to the Muskie world, and I’ve been planning on doing a lot of Muskie fishing around the local lakes, rivers, and creeks in Ohio. I currently have a Abu Garcia Revo Toro S 60 Reel with a 8’ Abu Garcia Veritas Toro Casting Rod, all spooked with 80lb Power Pro braided line. I’m really hoping to use styles of lures that don’t require a lot of finesse, could I get any recommendations on what kind of lures for a beginner with this setup? What size lures?(ounces) All input is welcome! |

Location: Athens, Ohio | Start with bucktails: both single blade Mepps and double bladed 6 or 8 blades. Buy a few Twitch and crank baits like Cranes or Jakes. If you order a Rollie and Helens Musky Shop catalog, you can browse thru the different baits and see which ones catch your eye. They all catch fish. Find something that is fun for you to work. m
ps - pls be sure you have a real good muskie net and release tools! Look up on YouTube How to Release a Musky. You don't want your first catch to die on you. m |

Do you recommend Muskie nets if you’re simply fishing in a creek on the bank? The spot I plan on fishing most is a spot on Brush Creek, the average size Muskie being around 30-40”. They’re naturally occurring there and not pressured by fishing at all. I do plan on a net when I go out on the boat but I hoped I could get by with gloves and long reach pliers and bolt cutters. |

| Single 8 bucktail has worked really well. Phantoms and Suicks work really well too, in various sizes. I wouldn't consider suicks and phantoms finesse baits, but they do require jerking motions - you will learn them quick. Be sure to grab some top water, like a prop bait or flaptail - straight retrieve. I would recommend the net for shore and boat fishing. You can never be too safe handling these fish, proper release tools are critical. Cruise facebook and craigslist for deals, you will find them. And in the meantime check out Youtube to learn how to use the baits and how to catch fish. Good luck! |

| If you are concerned about snagging up I would recommend single hook 3/4-1 1/2 oz spinner baits. They catch fish and are hard to hang up. |

Location: Athens, Ohio | Yes, if you have your waders on, I'd say netting the fish while still in the stream will be better for both of you than trying to drag it up on the bank. Them fishes don't always cooperate that way. m |

| The only lure I currently own for a musky is a 3/4 ounce swimbait designed to look like a pike. Would that work in a creek? If any Ohioans are here, I’m referring to Brush Creek down in Scioto County. Also, could anyone recommend specific models of bucktails? I know Mepps has several models but after that I’m lost. |

I tie my own tails, and rewire them when they get torn up... eazy peazy. |

Pearson Grinders, Rad Dog and a few others are built on heavy wire. The 1 oz model works well IMO |

Location: Cedarburg, WI. | Grab 700 buchertail, slopmaster, top raider and a shallow invader. All cheap as far as musky baits go, will flat out catch fish and don't require much beyond a steady retrieve to work. |

| I fish Ohio. Best tails for us are 700 Butcher Tails.Musky Candy in Blk/chartruse, Blk/Nickle, and White and with any blade You like. Double 8s are the largest we have success with on a regular basis. As for Ohio having small fish that's a matter of opinion. Multiple Ohio 50s have seen the inside of my boat and we lost counting the high 40s. Are fish are short lived but grow Fast and Fat! |

Black skirt, orange blades and white skirt/nickle blades have worked well for me. I would suggest getting 2 opposite color bucktails. Black/Orange and something bright. Basically something natural and something not natural. Sometimes the "not natural" color causes the strike because its different than what they see all the time.
