is there any truth to the notion that used boats sell lower in the fall than the spring / summer? I haven't paid enough attention to notice. Anyone convinced?

Depends on the dealer and inventory. A year old floor planned boat is costing money in interest, but these days it's not as much as when it was at 18%.

I think jaultman is asking more for the used market, but I could be wrong.

The last two boats I purchased I got very good deals on them. I purchased both in the fall.

I would be willing to bet later in the year is the time to buy. People are thinking boat purchase before the season starts. For new boats, non-current inventory is the way to go. Some dealerships might have some 2 years old. Good deals there.

From what we see from the classifieds here, now through August is better than later. If the boat isn't sold by Fall, it usually sits at the same price over the Winter.

Good point Steve. Holding costs are not nearly what they were 15 years ago for dealers.

Private sales;

Many people like to upgrade their boats in the late fall so that they can have them rigged and ready for the following year (myself included), inventory is higher then.

I've noticed that prices begin dropping more significantly late December/January. If you watch the personal ads closely you can pick up a good deal if you can find the right boat at that time… the highest prices I typically see are in the spring.

If you choose to buy privately absolutely the best approach is going to be knowledge… get to know exactly what you want by following/calling ads. Also, have your financing in place and how much you are willing to pay… you can then pull the trigger without hesitation. GL

I've been following the used boat market for 7 or 8 years. Yes, you can get more for your money during winter for obvious reasons: not much demand, can't test drive them. If you know what you're looking for and can find a seller that has or can get documentation of maintenance and a motor printout showing, you can get a good deal and minimize your risk. I bought my current boat in February of 2017 from a guy in Canada who needed money to pay for completion of his new house's landscaping. Took three years of watching to find one I wanted that was in my price range. I had the seller take the boat in and get a motor printout/compression check, as well as send me a video of it running at the shop. It's worked out well so far.

When you are out of warranty it's important to get the motor printout and compression check... great idea with the video!

This may sound a little nutty but I basically purchased the two vehicles in my garage and my boat pretty much sight unseen (pictures only). The important part of the equation was having the backup with manufacturer’s warranties.

After I put a deposit on my current boat (purchased over the phone/main motor had 43 hours on it), all I really needed to do was carefully look for damage on the underside/lower unit, once that checked out was good to go.

Perfect info. Thanks.

I’ve sold 5 boats and can tell you fall is a very tempting time to sell because you don’t have to worry about storage/winterization and you can then have the cash ready in the bank to shop away come early spring

if you are after a very specific used boat being concerned with timing might take back seat to grabbing the right boat when it hits the market.

My last two boats I was very specific on what model i wanted, Once I found one for sale and determined it was sound, I jumped. Knowing im not the only guy after that model. I didnt want to "miss the boat" so to speak because i was sitting on my hands.

If the boat your after is not in short supply then you might be able to play the price game.
