does anyone know why that lure have been discontinued ? personally the only thing that was a lil bit poor was the hook size but other than that it was a really nice top whit a sweet profile and it was ploping really loud. kind of surprise that it didn't get more success.

I agree but I think the hook size is fine but I also do not fish where you do so that's a perspective thing. It does have a nice plop, heavy blade that rotates fairly slow compared to other baits but that heavy blade gives it great sound. The bigger issue was some of them were very hard to get started. A fair amount of complaints about that on this site. Mine starts well, I guess I got a good one. Al ot of paint gone off it.

My favorite topwater, had trouble replacing rear hooks and shrink tube without the bait flipping over on the retrieve, also wooden bead often breaks from fish strikes.. Definitely a big fish bait as I caught my biggest tiger 52.5", and a couple of 50 inch plus purebreds. Bought several at the Minnesota show a few years ago as they were clearing out their remaining stock. Was told they would be produced again in the future by the company that bought them out. Hope that is true. That deeper plop is more effective than other higher pitched topwaters.

Wish I could but I'd find it hard to part with one. Perhaps when my cancer gets bad enough that I am unable to muskie fish anymore I'll sell off my stock of them. Unfortunately that may not be much longer at the rate I've been going down hill since the first of the year.

Picked up a 46" on a Rumbler over in Nebraska on Monday, so they still work.

The early Don S protos were far and away the best.Only some of the production models worked as intended IMO.Thank god I still have a few protos and a couple special 'Operation Muskie' ones that I'd hate to use-but likely eventually will.

They were all made of some kind of plastic/resin, Doug Johnson was the one who turned me onto to them. He and Dick Pearson were a couple of the early testers for Don up on Lake of the Woods. Some of the best muskie baits I've ever found were on the recommendations of some friends who are famous in the muskie world. When they talk I listen.

I have two of them and wish I had a couple more. Gave a white one away to my son. Should have painted it black and kept it. My small mouth colored bait (not walleye colored) is almost devoid of paint, and it collects water. They all sit low in the water. I had what I figured was a 53 (52 is biggest fish in my boat, and I know this was bigger) on my leaky Rumbler all the way to the boat that was lost on a bad net job by my son. Didn't matter, great hookup and fight. Rumblers are usually my first or 2nd bait on a spot.

Caught one this AM on a Rumbler and got to thinking about this thread. There were a number of variations in the protos Don made. Searched my boat and came up with 4 that varied in length, width, type of composite or whatever. I have more at home including a neon green fatso that should be here with the bloom already starting.
Anyway here’s a pic of those i had in boat. One on left is a tremendous hooker with extended rear hook and has an enamel like coating. Black one on right was a fatter real early version. This one was first used one morning when with the late, great Jack Burns and Matt my old partner in ERC. It grabbed a 40 first stop and a 50 on the second spot(one of Jacks favorites).
Great baits and when tuned gave(still give)a unique high pitched sound that we called the ‘pitter patter of lil mouse feet’.
Don was/is an inventive genius.

Sorry on the Woods using my phone and pic too big. If anyone interested in seeing them give me a text number and I’ll send. Maybe someone could then downsize and post it. Thanks.

Thanks to Supertrollr for again downsizing and posting. This is ‘Pinkie’ who caught a couple nice ones a couple years ago then disappeared on me.Found him hiding yesterday in a Plano box of assorted lures buried under an xtra life vest in my boat.Think he hid cause he was being outfished by ‘Big Pinkie’ ,a pink 10 inch Suick.
Anyway another proto of Don’s that was slightly smaller, lighter weight and had unusual scoops or cuts I suspect
were experimental in trying to get it to ride in a certain fashion. It does sit a tad higher in the water and makes the highest pitched sound of any i’ve heard. Often a good thing.
He is gonna get beat up bad this week sounding like that.
Poor pic but if you zoom hopefully you see multiple scoops in the top and sides.

Am I right in remembering that the roundnose ones with the extended tail hook (like the lefthand one in the pic of 4 lures) were a later version that Don sold at some winter shows under the Hog Head brand after Crazy Crank's effort with the Rumbler died? Same blade, different body shape, and a bunch of really cool paintjobs?
I have one that I bought just for display, I should probably stick it in the tackle box and put the "little mouse feet" to work!

Undersized i’m not sure on the Hog Head thing. Certainly could be.I just keep and throw whatever Don sends.Frankly never heard this but the enamel like coating is fancy so...???

On a side note,Pinkie had his chance this AM but decided to fly out of the water instead of grabbing on.??
