Posts: 41 | I wanted to learn something new. I've mad bucktails and blade baits for years, but have always admired how you wood guys hone your craft. I bought a block of basswood, got out a knife and some sandpaper, and started chipping away with no template or power tools. I'm immensely proud of how this turned out, and the feeling of learning a new skill is unmatched. always a good idea the cut the bill slot when its just a block of wood, now its near impossible to make the right slot

Posts: 41 | I used a screw-in bill, so I sanded the mounting surface level just where the hardware attached to the wood and contoured the area around it back into the shape of the lure. Thanks for the heads-up though, because I definitely would have made that mistake when I start slotting the bills in place.

Posts: 54 | Nice job Shro626 - it's fun right? If you haven't done it already, you can reduce your "whittling" time by using a coping saw or similar hand saw (if you don't have a bandsaw) to cut out the bait side profile and then do the same with the baits top profile. Works really well and helps to keep the bait even.

Works really well and helps to keep the bait even. For sure: All my fun stuff (band saw/ power sanders, etc.) is in my shop up at the lake. This was just a "Lets give this a shot since the weather is horrible" kinda thing at home on the couch. It will be exponentially easier when I actually have my tools
