I have been using Abu Toro 60’s including the winch. I am looking to get new reels for this season. I am considering the Shimano Trans 400’s but I have been hearing mixed reviews . Are they holding up well? Can these be used for double 10’s and heavier stuff. I am also considering Lexa 400’s and Shimano 400 Conquests. |

| This season, I'm trying to dedicate more time to trolling, so I'm also in the market for new reels, particularly Penn trolling reels. They have 4 different series, the rival, warfare, squall, and the high end, fathom. Any reviews on these would be appreciated. Already picked up a warfare 20lw, seems solid. kdawg |

Location: On my favorite lake! | I guess I am looking for what does each reel do well and what are the limitations. The 400 Tranx looks awesome but definitely concerned about the gear size when compared to a Lexa or Komodo 400 size. Should I just go Trans 500 or is there something better for bigger bladed bucktails. |

| from my group of a dozen anglers, the tranx 400 is much more durable than a lexa 400. guys seem to be using the 400A and 400H for a wide range of baits. I've run my 400A for 2 seasons throwing 10's 90% of the time and its still going strong |

Location: NE Ohio | also the tranx 300A and 300H if you have smaller hands. same reel as the 400's, with a little less line capacity, just not as wide. |

Location: SE Wisc | Nothing is better for huge blades than a 500 Tranx. However, it seems more guys are selling them now possibly in favor of the 400A or other “smaller” new reel that handles big blades well. I have a 400A Tranx and it’s the best reel I’ve ever used for blades-10x better than the old Revo Winch. The 500 Tranx is massive and quite heavy so you need to understand the trade off. |

Location: SE Wisc | Also consider putting new higher speed gears in your old winch. I have 3 old winches that Pikemaster replaced with 6.3 gears, they are now much more versatile and I’ll get many more years from them. |

Location: Waukee, IA | Bought a couple Komodo SS reels last year, really love them but they aren't great for casting small lures (1.5 oz and less). For bigger baits they can't be beat. I really like my revo toro S 60 and NaCl 60 for what its worth. |

Location: South Central PA | I fish a small river in SC PA so I really don't need big reels. I have been running ABU NACL 51 for a long time and they have held up well for me. I recently purchased a Daiwa 300 lexa - 5.5 gears - 6 pin model (cheapest model I'm guessing). It has been terrible compared to the ABUs. It doesn't come close to the power and grinds with number 8 bucktails. It really feels like a cheap $70.00 reel. Of course - maybe I got a bad one? |

Something to else to consider is that the Shimano Tranx, Daiwa Lexas, and newer Abus don't offer non-disengaging levelwinds like the older Toros you've been using. Some folks don't seem to care/notice but when casting it's a dealbreaker for me if the line guide doesn't go back & forth when casting so older Toros (like the winch with HS gears), 400 & 700 TEs, and the 300 & 400 Okuma Komodos SS's are all i use.
tkuntz - Did you run the Komodo right out of the box? Most new reels are lubed up with the long term storage-type grease that's typically sticky/gummy or, there's barely any lube at all. I ask cuz i have 4 of them and they all handle smaller baits without issue after a quick clean & lube. In fact, the ones i've picked up have gotten quieter and smoother once the stainless bearings break in. They're like a higher geared low profile TE in my opinion. |

I did notice they were over lubed (too much sticky grease) right out of the box. I still don't use them for my lightest applications because the spool is both physically larger and taller (increased moment of inertia) than my NaCl so it seems to be more of a physics problem than engineering or manufacturing issues. I only notice it on very light baits, which I have a light rod specifically for so I don't hold it against the reel. I'm sure if I went down to a 364 I would be happier for small baits but right now I'm using the 463s on my respective rubber and glide bait rods so I never really use small baits on them anyway. |
