Hiya,

That all depends on local weather conditions at the time. Early August it can be in the 80's, or if things have been cool like a couple of years ago, it can be in the middle 70's.

I'd say on average, they'd be upper 70's...

I believe it might be what CFollow is referring to... Posted about how bad the intense pressure would do on a body of water that has temps in the mid upper 70's as an average.

a warm summer temps very well could be 80 or more.. seems like odd timing to have a tournament on Tonka to me. the last few summers that time frame guys aren't fishing muskies in that time frame because of the temps so they have a tournament? ok then....

The PMTT is exactly what I am tiptoeing around.

There's money on the line, so people likely won't be horsing fish in and will play them longer. They'll take the time to get accurate measurements and documentation. What may initially look like a successful release could result in a fish sitting on the surface for some time, with 38' cruisers all over the place. IMO, it's contradictory to promote a catch and release tournament in those potential, but likely conditions. That said, a storm around then could make everything work out fine...better temps, better fishing, no traffic. Hopefully, that's what happens.

I think I'd be less concerned about water temps and more concerned about being able to fish the waters that would hold fish in waves coming every which way, and dodging the big boat brigade...

Temps could get high for sure, and I would be hopeful the PMTT would take this into account when time gets closer.

I know some guys here are going to wait until they see what temps are and then be late entries if it's decent conditions.

That should be the whole fields policy! If the PMTT doesn't realize that this could be a huge no no with water temps near or above 80, we need to make them aware of this. Keep in mind that it may be a two day event but with prefishing that can add a week or more of added fishing pressure at a questionable time.
Muskie fisherman are the leaders of catch and release and most don't fish when water temps are to high. Please protect the resource it's fragile.
thanks

Kap nailed it.
I love the PMTT ,... but.... This Tonka event is definitely BAD timing.
Perhaps 200 Hundred miles north .
At least a doz. or so Lakes to chose from. Not to late to change.

Plus, the PMTT usually does the Right thing.

Probably easier said than done, but ideally switching the Tonka and Leech Lake tournament dates would work a little better.

seems a little irresponsible of the PMTT to schedule a big tournament on 1 of the most pressured systems at the peak period for water temps... doesn't seem like the smartest move when putting the fishery first.

Never fished Tonka so maybe it's more predictable. Here in NYS Conesus - Chautauqua can range from 72 (which is ideal) to 84 which is basically shutdown conditions. No way of predicting this vector on our lakes.

^ It's about the same on Tonka. If it has been warm for an extended period of time, 82-83 isn't out of the question. If a cold front came through recently, low 70s is possible. This past summer a cold front came through on July 26 and it was 73 as of 8/5. In 2017 the first cold front was 8/3 and temps were 73 as of 8/6. Prior to those cold fronts the surface temp was 80-83. I don't have the data in front of me, but IIRC in 2016 it was >80 a couple weeks into August.

Sure seems like a bad time to schedule a tournament. I really hope they reconsider or have some sort of contingency plan for temps 80+, or even better, 78+.

I clearly thought that the temps had to be close to 80 on an average year.

Ok,.... I'm thinking Again ! This may be my biggest problem ….
I really am struggling with fishing the PMTT because Tonka is a HURABLE Lake to fish in Aug.
We all know that the Boat traffic is completely out of control this month... and.... the water temps are going to be HOT ! Like 78-82* or higher.... Lets do what is right for the fish , I say....
