Craig,
Just an FYI I just tried to ship a 9 ft. rod from Wisconsin to Pennsylvania, Speede Delivery does cover Pennsylvania cheapest I found was USPS $113.00 UPS wanted 180.00
Not sure if Speede covers Ohio but they are charging $20-$25 within the area they cover.

Wow. 110 for shipping. How do they justify that?

I don't think they are concerned with justifying it..

My guess is they really don't like shipping long items. If they are going to, they are going to make it worth their hassle.

Take a look at the average USPS delivery vehicle. A 9' rod is not going to fit very easily. Everything in shipping is focused on efficiency. The long rods don't lend themselves to that model. Speedy is the type of company that tries to find a niche among the giants.
