The last 2 years I have been at LOW, I go from zero to 100 regarding casting and figure eights. I have a painful experience on the lower left of my neck. Figure eights kill me and was wondering if our community can diagnose and help me with exercises that might help me for year 3. I cast lefty but am a right hander and hence start the figure 8 with the left hand. Not sure where to go as my doctor might not understand. Thanks for any insight.

Sounds like it could be a pinched muscle or nerve. Have you seen a chiropractor yet? Could be that you need a couple of adjustments. I hope you find some relief!

Bring a rod into your chiropractor and show him / her the motion. Be sure you have your feet in the same stance you would in the boat. In my Bass days I would have a foot on the footpedal when casting. We called it boat back.
Hurt like he77. Started throwing more flat footed and it helped. Your chiro will tell you whats what.

Any numbness and tingling in the arm that goes along with it ? If so, likely a pinched nerve.

try working out some before the trip to get in shape for it if possible. there was a good exercise article in musky hunter a few issues back that had certain exercises geared towards musky fishing positions and maneuvers. good luck.

Eating right and regular exercising helps most anybody. Easier said than done obviously.

Best suggestions is to bring it up to your doctor. Chances are they can diagnose the issue and get you to a physical therapist. Modern medicine is pretty solid.

Very week could have a herniated disc in the neck. For the rest of us , workouts before the muskie season would make sense plus stretch and flex before and throughout the casting day.

This. Let a doctor check it out and a physical therapist will develop a program that is tailored to your needs.

Let a doctor give an opinion. Could just be a muscle imbalance causing the pain but you have to rule out a structural issue first.

As suggested see a doctor, neck troubles are not something to take lightly. If it we're me though I would consider amputation.

I've been suffering from neck pain for about the last 5-7 years (football & jiu jitsu injuries). Long days on the water, working out and golf are when it tends to act up the most-for exactly the reason you said. Often times, I notice my neck is not held in a good posture b/c I'm constantly leaning over while figure 8ing and not holding an ideal posture.

Some things that help me while I'm on the water:
-Rotate having one of your feet up on the gunnel throughout the day (Captain Morgan like stance). Switch it up, with which leg is up every now and then & focus on having a good posture.
-Look up some neck stretches and do them throughout the day. Takes like 2 mins. The one that works best for me is pushing the back of your head against your hands or better yet against the wall (resistance stretches). If you work on a computer, do these stretches throughout the day, too.

In the meantime, start doing some neck strengthening exercises and most importantly, either see a chiropractor and/or start having neck DECOMPRESSION (don't know how to bold, so I capitalized it) done. A home decompression machine is very affordable, or most chiropractors will charge like $25 for a 15 minute session. It's a game changer.

One other thing to add: if you workout or do physical therapy, working on neck stretches/strengthening exercises will help, but also focus on building strength in your back muscles, especially your upper back muscles, too.

Someone mentioned changing foot position while figure 8'ing....
Along that lines, my back/neck issues went away when I lost weight (duh), but things were also helped when I started wearing Crocs for my boat shoes. Something about that thick rubber sole really helped my back out. It's a little thing, but something to consider...footwear.

Hiya,

I would bet this will be not just neck related but entire body related. What I would be suspecting is when you are fishing, you are using muscles that don't usually get used as much or in the same way. They get fatigued really quick and thus other muscles start to compensate for the weakness in the main muscles being used... Many times, this will cause spinal alignment issues, pushing certain vertebrae out of position, causing pain as a nerve is being compressed somehow.

My gut says chiropractor for this one to ease the pain and realign the spine, but getting some work out on those muscles will be a huge help in your trip. I think bringing the rod along and showing where the pain starts can help the chiropractor/doctor (if you choose that direction) is a good thing to show where the pain is and how it might be aggravated. Can go a long way in determining exercises/stretches to either eliminate or relieve the pain before or during your trip.

I have this problem.  My first 3 vertabrae are slanted forward and everything is pushed to the left.  Been going to the Chiropractor for almost a year now with no luck on fixing it with adjustments and stretches.  After seeing a bunch of different doctors, the Chiropractor finally gave me answers why I am having all these health problems.  I have horrible shoulder pain and some wrist pain with limited feeling in my left hand.  All nerve related because my neck is out of alignment.  The worst is that I have horrible sinus problems and have to use a neti-pot everyday.  I even did a deviated septum surgery to try to fix my sinuses and that didn't work lol.  I use to wake up every morning and feel like I had a terrible hangover, but never drank a sip of alcohol.  The neti-pot is saving me from feeling sick for the time being.  I am finding out that getting your neck back into alignment is not an easy task, at least for me.  I would go in as soon as possible to a Chiropractor so you don't make it any worse.

If you aren't keen on bringing all your gear with you to the doctor/chiro, you could try to bring a video. Bonus if you have footage of a catch! Might be enough for them to see what you need to address.

I’m dealing with three major repairs this winter, just had second knee replaced Tuesday, and need one more service appointment for a torn triceps tendon and hopes for all to heal before Spring tournaments. The docs seem to have a universal reply to all questions, basically that losing weight will trump all else in resolving physical issues. I’m afraid that I may have missed a class somewhere when I was gonna learn not to get fat. It appears us jolly sorts of St Nick lookalikes have nothing to be smiling about. If forced to take an oath, I guess I will admit it has really hurt too, not just the post-op pain, but the embarrassment of going around as a fat person all these years. I’m really wanting to eliminate this particularly unforced error from my playbook.

Do a google search sometime "health effects of losing 10 pounds".
You will be astounded what just ten pounds will do for your overall health...even if you have many, many more to lose. That first ten is a very important ten.

Thanks for all the the thoughtful comments. It’s not a weight issue, more of a I’m not ready to go. Was looking for an exercise I can do now to be ready. I’ll talk to my doctor about this next month.

We have a bunch'a good folk here but this isn't anything you need to troll the i'net on man. Have a doc send you to a PT and let them help you.

A good PT will give you reg. exercises to help you for long-term. This could worsen. Don't mess around...

In the short term, relax an let one of our tomato plants help you thru yer pain.

And if it doesn't help with the pain, at least you won't care about it anymore. Side note: Looks like Tommy was sampling the merchandise. Only reason I can think of for someone to post a picture of their "tomato plants"

Sorry for late reply. Went to my doctor first and she recommended to see chiropractor. Found that it is a rib touching my shoulder blade. Two treatments have helped. I’ll see where this goes. He’s got the spot dialed in.

It is not normal that you have pain. More than that, I'm sure that you feel it for a long time. Better consult a doctor and do something until it is not too late. I also had a trauma and I couldn't play the violin. My friend proposed to me to train in yoga together and I agreed. After some weeks pain left. You can also try to do some simple exercises like these https://yogapractice.com/yoga/a-complete-guide-to-chakra-symbols-and... and you will see good results asap.
