I have had tons of fish in the boat on regular swimmn' dawgs. I tried a bunch of different leaders.
Best I found was Stealth Tackles Spring leader. Put a split ring on the bait and attach leader directly to it. Leader is really light and does not kill any of the action.
Using a big leader with a big snap cuts down on the wobble, and wire leaders are a must lot of fish really eat these and end up with 1-2" of leader in their mouth.
I will be giving seminars about using Swimmn' Dawgs at both Milwaukee and Chicago Musky shows this winter.
A MH rod is best with these also. I use a 8'6"MH Musky Innovations Pro Series rod for them.

Don't you want the leader to be at least as long as the lure?

Those are exactly what I use. I have put hundreds of fish in the boat on those leaders never had any issue. I use them with all my small baits in spring. Never had a fish ever have more than 2" of leader in his mouth with these. They are very light and do not kill any action on small baits.
These are good too-
