Posts: 570 Location: Germantown, WI | I recently returned from a trip to Canada where I used a lot of double 8 buck tails. The problem I had was that on 2-3 different brands ( somewhat popular brands that I won’t name) I was disappointed how often I had to pump my rod to get them spinning!!! Many tims the bald souls only engage halfway back to the boat! So my question is, provide me with some brands I should check out to purchase that start spinning right away and consistently . thanks in advance for the responses

Posts: 859 Location: MN | Change over to mag 7’s they are a touch bigger and are .25 thick. Gerry Carroll ie bigbite on this board can make you some. Lots of guys use him the best skirts and baits for the money period. I’m in no way associated with him but like you I hate stuff that doesn’t work, and love. Stuff that does. Also guys will tell you that you can bend the clevis to help, also the type of bead below the clevis can help. That’s all true. But Gerry’s mag 7’s just spin. I know it’s costing him more to make his baits with those blades, but he’s looking out for the fisherman not trying to make an extra buck.

Posts: 2227 Location: SE, WI. | It sounds like your referring to dbl 8 Colorado's . This happens because the cup in the blade. Seems like a vacuum occurs when blades piggy back when wet. Kind of like a suction cup! For me, I'd suggest taking a side cutter, cut one clevis, and use as a single. Do very well with just a single Colorado. OR, rewire with a 7, and 8. One of them being a deep cup, one a standard Colorado. No vacuum occurs W/ varied blade sizes. And always use a solid bead under clevis. Also, a larger solid bead keeps blade away from shaft, helping blade spin more consistent! JD

Posts: 31 Location: Merrill, WI | I throw a lot of Musky Mayhem and Big Tooth and never have any problems with them spinning. Check the clevis and make sure it has a true "U" shape and that the ends where the wire goes through is truly parallel with one another. If they aren't just take a pliers and "pinch" them a little to get a true "U" shape. The more parallel the ends of the clevis the smoother the blades will spin.

Posts: 16632 Location: The desert | As mentioned, bend the clevisis inward to form a better U shape. Then get some spankys. And then upgrade to 9s.

Grab a problem blade by it's sides, and GENTLY & SLOWLY pinch with fingers, palms, or pliers to change the radius of the blade cup. More often than not, one slight change will allow the blades to fire right away. If the first squeeze doesn't work, repeat. This should take care of the problem.

Posts: 155 | Musky Frenzy Apache Double 8 and Stagger 8's spin perfect. The clevis is 1 solid piece instead of 2 individual clevis. They spin perfect! I would buy a couple of those if you can!!

Posts: 238 | As many others have said buy Spanky's. Mine always spin. I quit buying other brands 3 years ago. I also really like that the spanky double 8's have 2 hooks on them.

Posts: 4053 Location: Land of the Musky | Make sure the clevis is in-line with the shaft. Some will get off a little. The Tackle Industries D10 and D8s all use slightly oversized clevises to get them to spin up right away!! https://tackleindustries.com/product-category/bucktails_spinnerbaits... Enjoy.

Posts: 1080 Location: Aurora | Something to try before you sell off all of your non-spinny dbl 8's is putting a slight bend at the tip/hole where they connect to the clevis. It can be done with a small needle nose or round nose pliers and it can be done to an assembled spinner. Something else to consider when crimping the clevises down square is getting them as close as possible to one another so they "share" the load both on top and bottom where they meet. If they're not close enough, one will always ride on the other. I don't think a mic or caliper is needed, but you could use one if you're anal and want t be exact. I continue to bring clevises into square when building but tweaking & testing over the years has shown it's not as a significant contributing factor as implementing the bend at the tips of each blade. Once the bend is in place, it allows water to flow beneath the blades and helps to open them up. Other things to keep in mind is that some 8's have more of a dramatically shaped cup to them than others, run closer to the shaft when open, and will pull less than flatter shaped blades. Flatter blades open up more, provide more lift, and as a result pull harder. Most brands use thinner blades in the .020 to .025 range but some use .040 (like Spankys, Mayhem Trolling Girls, and others) which, because of their added weight are more spin-friendly, but also run closer to the shaft when open, provide less lift than thinner blades, run deeper, and don't pull as hard as thinner blades. Both catch fish despite most articles stating that the hardest pulling spinners attract the most attention and thus catch more fish. See below for some before & after pics of how to put the bend in and match up clevises. Posts: 426 | The bending trick works well. I've been doing it on the water for years. The bending works more often than not. Just go slow bending the blade a little at a time. Great tip!

Posts: 1000 | Spankys are good due to the quality of their components. Musky Frenzy doubles are the best in my experience as that double clevis enables the two blades to help each other "spin up" faster
