Jason Hamernick and John Hoyer Win the 20th Anniversary Mega Tournament on Lake Vermilion.

Overcast and windy this morning turning into bright bluebird skies and windy in the afternoon. Slow catch with only three fish being caught today. Today's Big Fish was a 51.25" caught by Hamernick & Hoyer for the win

I dont want to start a argument. I'm just asking because I dont know. How do they determine points per inch on a fish . Seems to me any thing over 50 inches I would think points would go up fast. Seems like every inch over 50 would get more rare and worth more points. Just wondering how the point system works .thanks for the help

TOURNAMENT SCORING

A. 30 (thirty) points for a 34 (thirty-four) inch fish. (Size limits and points will be adjusted higher or lower on some lakes with different size limits and regulations.) b. 1 (one) additional point for each 1/4 (one-quarter) inch over said size limit. c. Any measurement falling "between" 1/4 inch marks shall be "rounded down." d. In addition, there shall be 10 (ten) BONUS points for a "GOOD RELEASE." A "good release" is defined as a musky released "upright and healthy."
Once a musky is caught, keep the fish in the water (either in the net or livewell). DO NOT put a fish on the floor of your boat. There shall be no further fishing by either Team member, until the Judgment of that fish is complete, and the release completed. Measurement may be taken with the fish’s tail "pinched."
There shall be a TEN-POINT DEDUCTION from the total points scored for a fish that dies. Should a fish die, that cont

Congrats to Hoyer and Hammer! 2 great sticks on V. I am confused when people are suggesting that the bite was "tough." This was better than what a lot were expecting. 2018 Vermilion is a completely different lake than 10 years ago. Ask the people who fish it daily, not the ones who come once a year, or some who comes every few years.
85 teams (170 people) catching 20 fish in 2 days, is right around normal.

23 fish caught over 3 days by 185 boats, i'd call that a tough bite

If it was 185, yes. It was around 85.

I meant if there were 85 boats a day for 2 days + the 15 or so that qualified for day 3 = ~185 over 3 days

Still great results, it could have been a much tougher bite as we've seen before. In the end some great sticks put up some great numbers

There's 85 boats in the event and about 16% of the field fished on the last day. Approximately a 27 percent total catch ratio for the entire event. Look at a large number of muskie tournaments, and you will find quite a few on very good water with a total catch rate around 20 to 30%. By the very nature, lots of muskie tournaments could be considered tough. Stupid muskies are famous for leaving the scene right when needed.

Look at the social of some of the teams during pre-fish. A few were really lighting it up, and crashed and burned during the tournament.

Agree completely, I had read that some teams were fishing lights out days prior moving many fish and come tournament time they couldn't find any. Still plenty of fish to catch on the V. You're right though, muskie fishing can be summed up as a tough bite over all, so there's always going to be that 70-80% of the field that will call it a tough bite.

well good to hear that V does still have a few fish but it's certainly not up to V standards.

Congrats to the guys that were able to put something together and fish for money on the last day. That must have been fun for those guys.

That's for sure. One team saw 15 good ones during the event and couldn't convert.

It's popular these days to point out Vermilion is not what it was, and it's really obvious why...HUGE pressure over the last few years and the fact the lake is coming off the classic 'new reservoir syndrome' period. As stocking picks back up through DNR and through efforts from the resorts and guides, and the 'bite chasers' go to the next hot water, things will return to a more reasonable level, the muskies will not be so heavily pressured, and the bite will improve. Seen this many many times, and there's several lakes in MN transitioning right now from ridiculously good to more the norm for trophy fisheries.

Remember when Mille Lacs and Vermilion were THE place to go, and the double ten conga lines jangled continuously? A few folks rang the alarm bell way back then and accurately predicted the outcome, self fulfilling prophesy.

i applaud the talent that is in that list. some guys just land at the top no matter what and for good reason. i was in MN this past week and the conditions had to be tough to maintain a mental game especially for 3 days straight.

Congrats to everyone who caught fish.

19 Muskies over 40 inches... 9 over 45... 2 over 50...

Those are great results for a Muskie tournament.

You could have had 1,000 boats or 25 boats and still had the same results. Only so many active fish at any given time... and it's not like fish are active on every spot on a lake all-day, every day.

Hot bites can turn things into more of a crap-shoot (although I believe those who win a tournament earn it no matter how good the bite is).

Looking at the top spots... you can tell lake-experience goes a long way on waters some consider tough.

Chris and Matt have to hold some kind of record for catching a fish in like... every PMTT tournament they fish!
