These pics show how I go about building my thru wire baits when using the belly slot method. I fill in the slot with strips of the same wood used to make the blank. Some baits have been known to split or separate at the seam over time due to the wood expanding/contracting. This helps to eliminate that. The strips are cut to fit tight against the wire and are tapped or pressed into place using Devcon 2-ton epoxy. It's a bit less messy than filling with resin and extremely durable. A lot would have to happen before these baits would ever come apart.

Here is another method that I came up with to add weight to my thru wire baits. I made these thin strips of lead that get pressed into the slot. It removes any doubt about them being perfectly centered, and also eliminates the need for drilling holes and patching them in. To make these weights, I poured lead about 1/8" deep into a metal Altoids box and then cut them into strips.
They worked out really well and didn't take long to do.

Have you had a chance to run your perch bait yet? I'd love to see a big ski attached to it.

What are you using to bend your wire, I’m using heavy .078 and haven’t found a great way to bend it yet

The wire I use is heavy spring steel and can be a bear to work with. These jewelers pliers are how I go about forming the loops and round bends.

It is .062 spring stainless. I bought a big coil of it online quite some time ago but can't remember a manufacturer.

It is hard spring stainless. I don't like to use the soft wire for my baits.

All Eyes,

Amazing attention to detail! Your baits look great! How do you cut the slot in your baits that the wire eventually goes into?

Thanks rosko2-
The wire slot is cut with a table saw while the blank is still in block form.

Yup, unreal work! That spring steel can be a bear to bend! You got that very straight, I had trouble with that. Do you use a router for the rounding over part of your lure?

Thanks guys!
No router on these Eastman. They are carved and sanded with the use of templates that help check for symmetrical sides.
