Posts: 1828 | I'm thinking seriously about getting a glass boat when I upgrade, possibly next year. Full windshield is required, and I will go 18' or bigger. Right now I'm honing in on Ranger 1850MS Reata's. There seem to be quite a number of them for sale in the midwest, and it looks like an ideal size and layout for my family and my lakes. It looks like I'll have to look in the 10-to-20 year-old range in order to be in my price range. Are there common wear / damage / breakdown issues with fiberglass hulls that I will have to watch for?

Posts: 13688 Location: minocqua, wi. | my 24 year old tub is solid as a rock ... never a worry. i would limit my brand selection on old boats and make sure you don't get one that lived it's life outside or showing signs of any transom stress or damage. old tubs in many cases are likely better than the new ones being made.

What brand in that era might you avoid? Spell it backwards if necessary.

Posts: 13688 Location: minocqua, wi. | in deep v i'd avoid everything but regnar, noipmahc, reteeks or yffut ... of the mid-later 90's notirt were sketchy then and had some notorious glass quality complaints getting started ... would love to love them but wouldn't take the risk. their 215 claimed a hell of a big water ride though. i'd never touch a rekcart ... but, the newer ones now they are all combined are probably much better.

Posts: 2687 Location: Hayward, WI | Who made Regnar? Never heard of them. Just kidding. I have a 2008 Tuffy 1760. It didn't live on big water but I know it has seen some big water. Still very solid with no cracks or signs of aging. If I was laying down any significant amount of money and going the Tuffy route, I would get one that was all composite with no wood. I think Tuffy switched to full composite around 2005/2006. Good luck with your search!

Posts: 1828 | Thanks guys. Love the idea of all composite. Were 2000 - 2010 Rangers all composite, including decking? I have read they have composite transom and stringers but don't see anything about the decking and paneling so far.

Posts: 1828 | Does anyone know what Ranger's MS, RS, and LS designations each stand for? Couldn't find anything on Ranger's website or other places.

Posts: 1209 | I would closely inspect the gelcoat near the motor and the rest of the transom, then ask if you can push/pull on the lower unit while watching the transom for flex. Use a friend. And if you can see it move you are doing nothing compared to 100's of HP and waves
