pounder sized toppers? why not... thoughts? too big? 50% bigger than a cannonball. 10/0 front hook. ticker, 7/0 rear hook. will not body roll at any speed. Attachments ---------------- 20180818_150610.jpg (88KB - 448 downloads)

Posts: 2219 Location: SE, WI. | What your asking for Joe... For Me, Don't like big wide, heavy or fat round topwaters...easily lost fish....Not good hookups... My best hookup baits were smaller, thinner diameter , lighter topwater , simply hook better!!! JD

look really nice, did you add flash light in his crane ? im with jd,that's why i think this one would really need hooks spreader . let me see a vid of that ,im sure it worth the look ,if it spin i guess the sound will be loud

JD, I agree for the most part with you assessment. However, I've had pacemakers blown off the water by 5+ feet on more than one occasion. this rides low in water, does make noise and more of a BIG fish specialty bait. also, the front hook rides low under the bait. I prefer baits that sit in the water as to more on top. 50's rarely miss. they know how to eat. kinda meant for those big girls. The eyes are 3m diamond grade reflective tape with magnifying glass cabochons. pic is with flash.

Posts: 2219 Location: SE, WI. | My regular size Headbanger, is similar size to most pacemakers. My thinner diameter body headbanger has a higher hooking %, cuz a lot of fish slurp, and barely open wide, making a smaller diameter enter their mouth more likely! Also the thinner diameter is less buoyant, making it sit lower on surface! There was a bait made years ago called the Ozark mountain Minnow. It had props. Very narrow body, light weight which hookup % were very high! Not sure if I ever lost a fish on one. Also, big heavy hooks is Not the Answer for better hookups. If you take a 10" Jake, throw at someone's chest, with those 4/0 hooks, it would probably bounce Off. If you were to take Same bait with let's say a #1 treble hook, it would stick almost every time... I believe If more people put a 3/0 or 5/0 on the back of a dcg, they would catch more nippers. Most dcg's have 7/0's. Too Big IMO. Heavier baits just adds to a fishes leverage during headshakes, advantage fish!!! The pacemaker was blown out of water because fish missed the bait. Had nothing to do with weight! I simply do Not throw topwaters any more with rear sonics, without a stinger. I like my sonics up front . JD

great input JD! thanks. I still prefer rear props to globe type. rarely do fish other than nippers hit the rear. always s curve to hit the side. at least thats been my observation. this includes the bulging rear followers.

Posts: 532 Location: deephaven mn | JD your thought on hook size has me thinking, makes some sense not sure if a 3/0 hook catches the nippers, are they hitting the bait from behind? on a turn yes straight retrieve not as much but iam going to try downsizing

Posts: 2219 Location: SE, WI. | I build all my blade baits, so all are Custom. Let just say, if it's a full size DCG, I like the 6/0 or 7/0 up front under blades like most. The rear hook either a 4/0 VMC, or a 5/0 eagle claw, my choice. Let them stick out the tinsel/ skirting a tad. Fish hit short NIP, all retrieve, first 5', mid, and figure eight. These fish just nip, where the big 7/0 is many times a lost fish!!! Smaller hooks just seem to enter the mouth easier...W/ Nippers! IMO JD

Kind of a oxymoron there Joe," rarely do fish other than nippers hit the rear" What?;) I've found more rear rotators cause More rear nippers. Just my experience. I've had a group of Minnesota boys up at the woods tell me their Headbanger was their most consistent hooking topwater....up front Sonics!!!!........Nice to hear!!! Bought an XL Pacemaker at a show back a number of years ago. Even the maker said he did not have a lot of success on WI lakes, thought it might be better on Canadian waters or at least waters with large forage fish. I have not had even a rise on it. Works, looks and sounds like a regular pacemaker. I throw it every year 'cuz I looks and sounds like it should catch fish but not so far ;>).
