Location: The desert | I've dropped at least 4 or so fish in the figure 8 that just nip he back hook on the straight away in the 8. What's the best way to try and keep these ones pinned? When they hit in the turns they're not too difficult but the short strikers on the straight aways ive struggled with. |

| Mike, I solved that problem by throwing the oldest beat up double 10 in my box. The tinsel is so far gone that it only reaches the hook eye, leaving the back hook fully exposed. Add some shrink wrap or electrical tape to keep the back hook sticking out straight. Also make sure that back hook is stupid-sharp.
If you don't have one like that, take some scissors and cut an inch or so off the tail. It doesn't stop them from nipping but they seem to get hooks a LOT more often when they do.

| Make sure your setting your hooks back into the fish as well. And throw Bucktails without grubs on them. |

Location: oswego, il | It's the mood of the fish. You can do everything right and they still won't eat. I had a thick 43 eat at dark right at the boat sunday and i could see it was just skin hooked. Changed how i played the fish and gpt it in the net. The fish ate agressive yet didn't get the bait well. Tonight i had one hit and miss. |

Location: Aurora | When they're right on it, nippin & poppin their mouths i've had luck stopping suddenly and droppin it right on the tip of their mouth. I think it disappears from view when that happens and when they feel something against their mouth, they instinctively open it. Even if their mouth opens just a little yewl hook up but i've had the whole bait end up in their maw.
In my opinion, a smaller rear hook is gooder than a large one fer nippers & poppers. |

| The suggestion of setting the hook back toward the tail is a great suggestion but hard to do or remember in the heat of the moment especially when its a big fish. Lots of practice helps, but in my case I don't get a lot of practice as it requires getting muskies to follow. Best of luck. |

| Speed it up and don't let them eat it in the straight, hang the bait in the next turn and you will get them in the corner of the mouth. Pulling the bait from them fires them up even more. |
