Can anyone offer opinion on leaders? Material, lengths, brands, etc. Is wire better than flouro? Or one better than the other in this or that situation or with a certain bait type?

Buy em, make em, are there any "to live by" rules?

Thanks

You'll get a variety of opinions on this. I use all 175 lb fluoro. 15" for most casting, 10" for gliders and side-to-side topwaters, and 48" for trolling. AFW swivel on one end, Stay-Lok snap on the other, connections crimped. I make them myself.

I don't claim that this solution is optimized for every single bait. My goal is simplicity and relatively small component count without interfering significantly with bait function.

200lb fluoro, i like the vmc touch lock snaps. never lost a fish, or have had them open and easier to open vs stay lock imo. size 5 is whats available on Berkley site but i was able to get my hands on size 6. it's all personal choice.

Been making my own 180 lb fluoro for ~10 yrs and lots of buds use them.. no issues, quality bb swivel and stay lock.
for fishing rocks I make my own 175 lb 49 strand leaders a touch longer, like 15"... both have been solid. no issues, no breaks.

All wire for me...

Had a nice fish slice right through a 180 lb fluorocarbon leader a couple years back... I've put this up before...

Thank you for your opinions. Shorter length for glide baits or side to side top water is good info. Appreciate it.
I have used flourocarbon prior but always had the feeling I could get bit off.

Thanks all.

Wire for me as well.

Others will say they have caught X number of muskies and never had a cut off but really all it takes is one fish to change your mind. Had a 35” cut right through 150lb flouro while in the net and that was enough for me to stop using flouro. I have had quite a few engulf rubber lures and the leader is sticking out the mouth. Pretty glad to have wire on when that happens.

Make my own fluorocarbon ~ (16" to 18") leaders (much cheaper), using Seager "Blue Label". Tie directly to braid on one end a snap on the other end. Never had one break, come loose or get bit though.

i highly suggest you to make your own.if you can breath you can make leader it's that easy.don't listen to the insecure paranoid, for them everything is hard even breathing lol. the key is to get a good crimper and then all your crimp will be rock solid. after that you will a lil bit more proud when you land a nice fish with YOUR leader
