I bought a used head unit for an HDS7 off a guy, not on this site. It's Gen 1. I got everything situated last night and when I put a map chip in it takes forever to load the map, then takes forever to load new data if I zoom in/out or move the cursor around.

I tried 4 separate map chips, all LakeMaster (MN and LOTW/Rainy), all that work fine in every other graph in my boat (HDS10 Gen2, HDS5 Gen 1, LCX25c).

The LCX25c is flush mounted right below where I put the HDS7 and I ran a comparison test after noticing how slowly this graph loads/adjusts. The HDS7 takes between 5 and 11 seconds to load new data depending on what I was doing. The same action on the LCX25c resulted in near instantaneous loading of the same data. Similar actions on the other units resulted in near instantaneous loading as well.

Anyone have any thoughts on why the HDS7 Gen 1 is so slow? Fixes?

I'm not outside the window where I could use PayPal Buyer Protection as this thing is clearly not functioning as it should be...but if it's as simple as a hard reset or whatever I'm not looking move on immediately.

Maybe not quite relevant.

I had an older 597 CiDi and it would take forever zooming in or out to redraw the maps.

I now have a Helix 7 for mapping and it is much, much faster.

IMO, I'd try a hard reset before sending it back. The Gen 1 (any brand) units are slow to begin with.

Sounds normal to me. What chip are you using? Turn off 3D, photo overlay, and all that jazz and it will speed up.

I'll try shutting those off and doing a hard reset.

Why would processing be so much faster on the Gen 1 HDS 5 that's in there if having it be that slow is normal? The chips, the other units I tested the chips in, and all of that detail is listed in my original post. This unit is markedly slower than all others, including an LCX25c. I have a hard time believing that is normal.

It is not, I’m taking an SD card to work tomorrow and will be doing that next. Hard reset seems to have helped a little. Thanks for all the suggestions!

Installing the most recent update improved the speed considerably. It's still slower than all of the other units, but it's usable now. Thanks again for all the ideas.

Do you have lots of waypoints routes and trails on it?

No, there weren’t many that I saw. It’s ok now. Still a bit slower than the others but usable, which is all I was looking for. Just needed something to use for a couple years until I can upgrade everything.

I run one Gen 2 unit for main mapping at the helm and noticed it was getting kind of slow while saving waypoints, so while I was making a copy of my waypoints the thought occurred to me to just go ahead and purge the unit while I was at it based on what you said.

I saved the waypoints to an SD card, purged the unit, and then just reloaded the waypoints... happy to report the speed between when I push the key to record a waypoint and when it appears on the display is much faster now - basically equal to the Gen 3 which is almost immediate. Thanks
