Went over and fished a Polk county lake for opener on Sat and water temp was 81,,don't care if it is surface temp that's crazy,,and now 90 degree plus days on Sun and Mon coming. Typically we make the decision to quit at 80,,so is it over before it starts.

Rain in the forecast and cooler nights should stabilize that water right where it should be for a good normal June. I was in Hayward and also saw surface temps in the low 80's, but had 70 5' down and mid 60's 10' down.

in the history of message boards the chastise number has been set ... thou shalt not fish muskies in 80 degree water. there is always next year. i mean, it's for the fish ...

I totally agree if it's later in the year, end of June/mid July for up north. These fish aren't living in that danger zone right now, heck the panfish aren't really even in on nests up north in the clear lakes yet. It is a great rule to go by, too many people uneducated on this subject or just plain don't care.

I too fished Polk county on the opener. At 3pm the bigger walleyes were up on 4' of sand chasing gills. That warm water was only inches deep in that flat calm weather. If you'd a jumped in you would have experienced shrinkage.

Yes, it was strange.

Jc
I was on Apple river flowage,,dark water but it usually runs cool with the current. There was a dnr rep at landing he was very surprised at the water temps he's also part of the electro shocking crew too,,he said population is good but biggest they shocked was 48 which is a little disappointing,,that lakes gotta be the pontoon capital of the world.

Yep.....Wouldn't have expected the DNR to net anything bigger than a 48 on the Apple. That pond weed sucks up the heat fast, but the current cools it nicely, except parts of the widespread. If it's too warm those fish will hunker down in the shade till it cools.
