We are considering a trip to Cave Run in March but are wondering what type of trip we
could expect then? Realistic expectations for fishing quality? We would probably stay
at Mountain Muskie Lodge and do their $695 special they advertise in Musky Hunter.
Thx for any info

March is one of my favorite times there. It can be the Best or the Worst, depending on the weather. I've seen 40 mph winds and 3-4 ft waves, snow, ice...I've also seen good days where it was just a bit chilly. Google "Rattle your way to spring success" and that should give you an idea of how to fish it. You can expect water levels at winter pool, which makes traversing some of the stump areas tricky and dangerous for lower units. Still, there's plenty of places to fish I recommend, if you go, getting one of Tony's guides for at least a day.
Muskies Inc is working on a tourney for it's Region 3 members for the 17-18, so lodging may be at a premium at the lodge but there is always (what Sponge Bob used to call) the dis-Comfort Inn at the I-64 Farmers exit.
I've got big fish there in early March, and big skunks, too. go if you can but beware of weather. m

Just curious, where do they fish for musky's in March? Our season in NY doesn't open until June, same in Ontario.

Kentucky's season never closes although most don't fish for them when the water temperature is really high. I've heard April is one of the best months to be down there.

I have done Feb and April had success in both months. More of a river bite in Feb. I love April because you can camp at Zilpo and the place is basically empty, weather usually isn't bad but they do have small cabins too. Just be aware that the campground is a good ways away from any gas stations or groceries.

I think a trip in March may be the ticket.

You might stop in at the Cave Run Pro Shop and see if you can get some information on the bite.
One year, they put us right on the fish. Told us exactly where, how deep, and what to use. And, they were spot on.
Of course, they may be more helpful if you buy some stuff.
We have done pretty well trolling at Cave Run but I don't think it was in March. Good Luck!!

Anytime on the Cave can be good. Spring can be a little tricky depending on water levels and weather. That is the time for a true trophy. Rattle baits jerk baits are all you need. If the water is clear; throw some AC shiners ,006's and 004's.

Just want to give a heads up while you are in the area . I have been there twice, and do not drink if I am driving, but on both trips while coming back to our hotel from dinner in Morehead , we had to stop for an alcohol roadblock. We did not have an issue, but want to give you guys fair warning. Morehead is a college town, with 2 restaurants that serve alcohol . We did catch fish, fishing shallow water back in the many coves and bays with small jerks, rattle baits, and twitch baits. It was great to fish, while my home lakes were still iced up. Good Luck

Just giving you a heads up, last year the Bull was closed and don't know if it will be open this year. So fuel up and get food or license when you get off of the highway other wise you'll have to make a long road trip. We stay at Tony's and usually bring all are food and drinks with us that way we have more time to fish. I've been there 4 times and caught fish 3 out of 4 with a 44 and a 47 the last time there. Was there early spring and had snow in the morning and 40s in the afternoon. Always had a good time. Good luck if you go.

Right now Cave is on the rise from all the rain. US ACE shows it being 10' above winter pool (4' above summer). Expected to go higher due to all the rain. Spent the day at the Southern Muskyfest. Heavy rain then heavy snow on the way back north. They aren't letting much water out since everything between Cave and the Ohio River is partially flooded. Supposed to be a very wet early spring. Be prepared.

Fished Cave yesterday. Got a late start from Cincinnati to let the snow storm in KY pass. Fished from 11 am- 5:30. What was forecast to be a sunny 50 deg day turned out to be cloudy, low 40s. Water still about 15' high and all the ramp docks we saw were still unusable. Scott's Creek ramp is usable but you there is no place to beach the boat there.

Saw a few fish porpoising early and missed two but that was it. Fished several areas as well as inside the tree line in Big Cave and Scott's. Spent most of the day casting but trolled for a couple hours as well. All the baitfish schools we saw were at 20-25 ft. Didn't try any jigging.

Well, March wrapped up and now April (and more snow) is here. Cave has been putting out some quality fish for Tony's and Gregg's guides down there. Not so much for us weekend warriors. I think the fish are confused with the fluctuating water levels (back up 7' above summer pool and going up) and water temp changes. That's not going to change any time soon as an above average rain season is in front of us. Our lakes here in OH are going back up, too. Just wish they wouldn't close all of the gates off to the ramps. Nothing wrong with launching from the top of the parking lot. Wouldn't have to go very far to catch fish.
