This may be commonplace, but has anybody seen anything like this? Not I.

Two things.

1. I think it's a swim bladder thing because I caught a pike about 20ft down and I went to revive it and it went crazy at the last second and flopped into the water, then it swam in a circle like the Muskie in the video for about 15 seconds before it went down normal to never be seen again

2. Picture yourself fishing, and all of a sudden this guy swims by 20ft from your boat. I think that would be one of the freakiest things I've ever seen fishing

I seen it on st claire several times and in shallower water. This looks much different than muskies swimming with the top of their head out, this is a more pronounced angle. Its odd because from a distance it looks like the end of a log sticking out of the water then you think, i have never seen a log there before then, DOH!

The few times i have seen muskies with their head out of the water at this angle, they have been big fish. Seen smaller ones with the top of their heads out but not like this.

Ive seen this quite a few times. Both tigers and pure. One of the best memories was when i was fishing the shore. I walked up the shoreline and spooked a 50 sitting in a foot of water. It bolted off in a big u turn, then poked its head out of the water looking at me for a few seconds before going under.

Nobody knows for sure why they do it,,one MN dnr biologist thinks it's to flush parasites out of their gills,,it shows one thing their not concerned about their eyes being exposed to direct sunlight.

I had this happen 8 different times on a LOTW trip one year, except they did it following my Super TopRaider. It was almost as if they were verifying the Super T wasn't fake before hitting it. Needless to say, none of those fish hit the lure when they poked their head up to take a look.

Now that is Nuts there...I couldnt handle that once let alone 8 times very odd....I seen that 8 times if I seen one do like in the video I might have to try and lay a perfect cast to land a bait in the mouth!!!LOL

Yeah it was frustrating. It was like they knew what I was trying to do and it was always following a cast, they were never just porpoising.

I've seen some photos and watched other videos showing this and one thing I noticed was that it seemed like every time it occurred it was on a calm day. The fish weren't doing it on days with rough water. Just what I gather from it, it could just be it doesn't get noticed on rough days. Or maybe they really are trying to look around and they know that when the water is calm they can see farther and when the water is rough it doesn't work very well, just my opinion. Maybe I'm giving them more credit than they deserve. Has this occurred more so on murky water rather than clear water?

Have seen something similar a few times, but not for that amount of time. We saw it twice one summer in the narrow channel from the lake we live on to the next lake in the chain. The second time I joked to my wife that maybe the fish knew all the traffic had to go through that area and he was checking both ways before crossing, in that both times it was going between the channel markers.

Lots of theories out there. Digesting a meal, gill parasites, swim bladder issues... Only time I've seen it was on hot flat days when we didn't catch any fish.

My personal theory (joke) is that they're looking around to see if there's any mama loons with babies on their backs. But every time I start believing theories like that I see one do something so stupid I'm convinced they just eat whatever swims by, remember to breed once a year, and sit around completely dormant the rest of the time.

I think it's a combo of takin' a lookee-loo around & lack of oxygen.
Only time i've seen it or heard about it bein' seen is during no wind summer periods.
Oxygen exchange happens at the surface & passin air over their gills feels nice i bet.
The biggies are old enuff to know, the further their head's out, the gooder it feels.

Saw one swimming around like that on Tonka this year. When I first noticed it, it was swimming roughly parallel to the boat about 30-40 feet away, appeared to notice the boat, made a 90 degree turn and headed straight for me. I kept still and the fish swam up to about 18 inches from the boat before heading down quickly. Several casts in the area yielded no follows. Very odd. It was a smaller fish, maybe 36-38."

One time I was night fishing on a wall for walleye with some guys catfishing and I was kneeled down doing something with my head close to the water(think I was getting in minnow bucket) and a muskie came strolling on by like that. Scared the crap out of me, first I thought it might be a paddlefish because I saw them eat sort of like that when they were more common in my section of Ohio River but we got out our flashlights on her and sure enough it was a muskie, she had her head pretty far out of the water.

Is that what they call porpoising?

No, porpoising is different behavior. Muskies sometimes swim on the surface only 1/2 submerged, but the head isn't sticking up in the air like in the video. Weird..had them porpoising within 10 ft. of the boat. I have had NO luck getting them interested in a bait.
