Location: Minnetonka | They're two different fish. The 59.5" was found floating on Mille Lacs and the "tail less" 59" washed up on a beach on Leech a few weeks ago. |

They do where there is not a chance of problems stocking over populations with natural reproduction. Several lakes in Wisconsin have been stocked with spots, jury is still out on growth rates VS Wisco strain. In the cases of Leech and Mille Lacs, compare Bay of Green Bay. Complicated, but water chemistry, forage, and lost more are involved. Some Wisco fish got real big in Mille Lacs.

Location: Contrarian Island | the Madison chain leechers were put in 2006. I know of a 51" last Oct that was a leecher. 11 yrs old. If I'm betting, the results will show Leechers will grow longer than 50" here in a much larger % of fish.. the chip strain genetics they stock simply don't have much of a shot growing over 50" here... will be interesting to see how big the Leechers get here. the DNR will never switch over for a couple reasons.....Cap City club buys them from MN and puts them in ...the DNR I don't believe has any $ in the game.

Is the Kalepp Farm responsible for all the big fish caught in Wisconsin?

Location: north central wisconsin | I'd like to say our trial with stocking leachers here on Wisconsin river was a wild success. Not so much.
They either died or dissapeared. After ten years of on and off again stocking I know of two that were caught(I got a nice 44 in typical leach fig 8 fashion), and one in dnr nets. We cessated the project on my decision that they are not showing up like the fish from WI hatcheries. With that said, the fish we've been getting from one hatchery with WI ties(To say there is 'a' Wisconsin strain of fish is like saying there is an American strain of people), are concerning the dnr with seemingly 'stunted' growth. I'm communicating with kalep, but it is never a sure thing that he'll have fish for us. Good discussion. |

Big muskies are great, but please don't bring your Leech Lake fish to IL just because they did well in other places. It's NOT just the fish, stupid. |
