I'm looking for a 400 sized reel for a bigger setup. I currently just use a 300 tranx and I really like that setup a whole lot. Anyways, my question is am I really best off if I get a 400 tranx or am I better if I get a diawa?

I've got a Tranx and a Lexa in the 400 size. I prefer the Tranx and its not even close.

As stated above, Tranx, and it’s not even close. The two should never even be mentioned in the same sentence IMO. The 400’s have held up like my 500’s with similar use, cleaning, and lubrication. The only times I get the 500’s out anymore are for pounders and 100 lb test or burning 10’s (not something I do much anymore),

The 'best' means different things to different people. I have not personally had good experiences with the 400. Sort of jaded me a bit. On the other hand, my 40 Beast, Okuma Citrix, and Piscifun Alijos have been flawless. Is the 400 a good reel? Sure.

There actually IS no 'best'. There is personal preference.

Really like my new Prorex! Big improvement over the Lexa and if it’s durable it will replace my 400 Tranx’s.

I would have easily said 400 Tranx. But i got a Prorex this year and as long as it holds up i don't see using anything else. Its that good.

No issues at all, casts a mile and is smooth. Great drag, too.

Im interested in this as well,, Along these same lines I am, down the road I'll be getting a shock and awe for big rubber and any other heavy baits with 100lb line. Is a 400 size worthy of the task? I know alot of people say the tranx 500, but does that 400 or any other brand hold up and have enough line capacity? Any experience to share would be appreciated. I'm a lefty ( reeling ) and looking for a speedy reel. Thanks

I've been using the Beast, Tranx and ProRex this year. Daiwa ProRex for the win imo. Smoothest casting reel I've ever seen. More moving parts though, we'll see how they hold up. Everyone who has casted it, loves it.

Rookie… I have tranx 400’s and 500’s ..for anything mag dawg size or larger I always throw big rubber on my 500’.. not only a better tool for the job but 500’s are an absolute warhorse .. they just hold up better than the dozens of other models I’ve fished the last 25 years (other than maybe a TE700 but those are discontinued) … tranx 400’s are nice , I personally still reach for my 500’s more …and would be the no-brainer choice if you want a big rubber reel spooled with 100 lb…. Although if you need left hand reel don’t think the 500’s come in a 501 model? …. I wouldn’t throw pounders on a 400 size reels , I’m sure some do.

Thanks for the reply. That's pretty much what I've been hearing. I don't know why these companies can't make left and right versions for each reel. Other than the frame and a few clips and reversed gear teeth everything else should be pretty much ambidextrous. I'm not sure if patigersandtrout is looking for a truly heavy setup or not but this should help him figure out what he wants as well. Thanks again

Steve, did you order right from the Piscisfun web site? Trustworthy? Under $100?

Not really heavy lol just an xh TI rod. Reel would be spooled up with 80#. Gonna use it for general purpose, mostly heavier glides though lol.

Yes, ordered a couple last night, one for me and one for Keith. Watch the website for special discounts, 15% is not uncommon.

As Steve said, there is no best, just personal preference.
The bigger Beast fits my hand and the gear ratio works great with how I fish. To me, the Beast high speed is the perfect reel for me.
I have a Tranx 400 High speed. Love how it feels in the hand. Casts a mile. Very smooth. But the gear ratio is just too fast for how I like to fish. No doubt the regular speed Tranx would probably be excellent for me as well.

I have a couple Concept 13 A3's on my smaller or regular sized outfits and they work great. I have Tranx 500 PG on my XX heavy rod for throwing 10's and big rubber along with throwing very large plugs that most people troll with. I like my Tranx 500 and as we speak I have a 400A Tranx PG on the way from the vendor. Hope I like it.

Received my reel spooled it up and went down to a pond in a park not far from home and tried it out and I really like it!
(see above post) Nice powerful and smooth reel.

Both of our 400 models lost the drag entirely. They are spooled correctly with backing. Any ideas before we send them in? Less than an hour on both.

Steve, shimano has a fix for these by adding one washer. The early reels had the drag loosen while fishing. I grease the flat side of the metal washers under the drag nut when I service reels, and have never had a problem since.

May be silly but have you removed the sideplate and checked if the drag stack was installed correctly? Or if they are coated with oil? Might be that simple but maybe not. Worth a shot though

Steve, I had the same thing happen to both of my 400's approx. 4 years ago when they first came out. I sent them in to Shimano. It was an ugly process with calls and talking with there customer service, sales and engineer staff. Even the local Shimano rep. This is when it first started so it was new on the scene. They added another rubber washer but it does not entirely fix the problem. I spoke with Mat at Mat's reel repair and then sent them there. What a hassle all of this was. He is very familiar with the problem and he has taken care of most of the problem. Shimano to this day does not believe there is a problem! I wonder why! But all of the repair guys do. Great reel other than that. Make sure you have a power handle on.

I have to agree with Steve on this question. I have a couple of 400's which I like and use all the time. However both have had to be sent in for level wind problems. I also have a couple of old NACL's that had the drag washers upgraded which have been flawless. I had a 500 which I sold after a year of use. I just prefer a smaller reel. All the reels mentioned are good, quality tools; though not perfect.

Steve was right on!! That Piscifun Alijos flat out works. Got it for $85 to the door. If that drag is 30 some pounds like stated it will be crazy good. Time will tell
