I am looking to buy a new reel this year. I currently have a lexa 400 high speed 7.1, and Shimano corvelas. Should I get a Shimano tranx, or a 400d? Was thinking the 40”d because I already have a high speed reel

100% tranx without a doubt have both types, in 300 and 400, the in 400 size the tranx is way more comfortable to cast imo.

Ok. Even though I already have a high speed reel? What is the main benefit for having a 5.1 to 1 reel?

There are two speeds available in the tranx. Just get the lower one if you're concerned. I only use high speed reels. If I want to go slower, I just reel slower.

Ok..that makes sense. I wasn’t sure if there was a benefit to having multiple gear ratio reels.

I own and use a 400D. It is on my jerk bait rod. And I love it. Smaller reel, offset and it helps with the gliders. Really it is one of my favorite setups to use.
I don't know, though, if that is the reel I'd want for bucktails. I think you'd like a 400 Tranx more for that application. That reel just seems smoother. Thinking of the 400 high speed Tranx.
If you just want to buy one reel for multiple applications, I think the regular speed 400 Tranx is probably the way to go.
The reason I love that 400D is that it is offset and really makes working gliders and big rubber easier for me.

Yes I understand. I’m not necessary looking for an all around reel. I have the diawa lexa with high speed. And the Shimano corvelas in low speed. I am looking to buy another reel, and want to spend the money on a good one. I throw all kinds of baits, not one more than another. I was between the 2 (tranx and d). I am now leaning toward to tranx in the lower speed version with power handle? Because I can use my lexa for high speed?

Sounds like a good plan to me.

Tranx 400 low gear with a power handle. Do it, you won't be disappointed. I have run both reels. I have 3 Tranx's set up like that, sold my D soon after getting it.

It looks like the 400A comes with paddle handle. Where do you get a power handle?

There are a bunch of options out there for power handles. I have 2 of the lower gear ratio 400s with power handles I purchased off amazon for around 12 dollars. They have a foam knob on the end rather than aluminum or plastic, which makes them very comfortable to use in my opinion.

Hi guys,

I am researching this subject a lot, and I am still equally confused
I am hunting Musky a lot, it is my first season at it, but I am hooked big time. I use all kinds of lures (D8, D9, D10, jerkbaits and gliders, bulldawgs..., all plastics...) fishing in Canada.
My first combo is SC Musky Mojo with Calcutta 301D. Works well but i need another one. I have narrowed down my search to Calcutta 401D, Tranx 401A or AHG and Tranx 501.
If I get 401D i would pretty much have two combos with almost same reel, sounds stupid.
I understood that 401D and Tranx 401A are the same performance just different style? Correct me if I am wrong on this?
Tranx 401 AHG would give me much faster reel, good for burrning tails but does it have enough cranking power?
My understanding is that if you are to have 2 reels, 1 should be faster, other should have more cranking power, right? Should I consider Calcutta 301D to be power one at 5.1:1? And get Tranx 401 AHG to be the fast one?
Sorry for all the confusion, but nobody really compare them head to head and say definitevily which one is for what purpose

In all theory, you would need three rods:
1/2oz to 3oz + TranX 401AHG
2oz - 8oz + Calcutta 401D
4oz - 12oz + TranX 401A or even 501A
What a perfect world it would be
