I'm ordering a new boat. Total weight will be slightly under 3000 pounds (so brakes will not be required by law in my state) loaded with gear and fuel. I have the option of ordering the trailer with or without surge brakes. It will be towed with a full size 1/2 ton pick-up.

My question is if the extra stopping ability is worth having to do maintenance on the brake system or the possibility of having to deal with mechanical issues with the brake system?

Yes or no to ordering with brakes?

With, for sure. But I prefer electric. If you are planing on towing in cold weather (possible ice or snow) you can turn the gain down and keep from having the trailer wheels lock up.

Honest opinion, Yes, I would. I would also be sure to order disc brakes, not the older style drum brakes.
I have a rig that falls into that same weight class....2960 lbs. to be exact, (I had it weighed because I was curious.) I tow with a 2014 Ford F150.
The brakes never worked with my old trailer. Now that I have the new trailer, I am very pleased with how it handles with the new brakes and I feel that the little bit of maintenance is well worth the price.
Safety first.

Hiya,

If it can come with brakes, I would say by all means get them. It is an extra measure of security on the road. Granted your truck will do the job, but if you have to stop really quick, that extra set whether surge or electric, or electric over hydraulic...it all helps out to get you stopped in the shortest distance possible.

I would agree on getting disc brakes as well.. They do a much better job of stopping as the force is sideways to the rotor as compared to a drum which works against the direction of travel. And most definitely, easier to service as there are no springs, no shoes to adjust for clearance, etc. It is a much much simpler system to work on.

If you're going to be towing in any state other than yours that requires brakes then get them. Ohio has a 2000 lb limit on trailers without brakes except boat trailers. Then its 3000 lbs My boat/trailer package should be well below the 3000 lb mark but surprisingly it is just under the trailer GVWR of 3154 lbs WITHOUT all my gear in it or a full tank of full (weighed on a CAT scale). Luckily, I has a set of electric brakes installed last year and it makes a world of difference stopping. Adding to that is my new Chevy's integrated brake controller that uses brake line pressure and simulates surge brakes but with the adjustability of electric.

As seen elsewhere, yes, in case of emergency you would want them. Stopped short by a foot, with breaks would have been 50'...

Yes!!! I've got a lighter rig than you describe and can't imagine the number of whitetails I would have tagged without them. Often times traveling to and from the water just before or just after daylight.

There is a risk of mechanical issues with the brake system but good maintenance will reduce the chances. You'll be thankful for the trailer brakes when some fool pulls over right in front of you and jams on his brakes to make an exit.
