Muskie Fishing -> General Discussion -> Crib Fishing

Does anyone concentrate on fishing deep cribs in those clear, featureless lakes (Round Lake) during the day? If so, what kind of success have you had and what type of presentation do you use? I have heard of people using heavy 2 oz. jigs with a small sucker and stinger hook. It seems that strategically placed cribs should always hold baitfish and in turn, muskies. What do you guys think?

I used to fish Presque Isle every year, and if there ever was a lake that lacks features, this is one....can be a tough mother to fish. But there are some cribs on it, and on a clear day you can see down 25ft all the way to the crib itself. And I have caught fish on those cribs, and seen other fish hanging around on it. Though I'm no expert, I'd say on a featureless lake you'd be a fool to not fish every piece of concievable structure that you see, including cribs.

Round Lake is a body of water that should be fished in low light conditions. Fish the cribs but do it in the evening or at dusk. You will have more success and be less frustrated. Seems to me Round is pretty much a play lake most of the time.[:sun:]

Even though it may be a low percentage success rate, it is always worth a few casts on the way past. Whether it is just coincedence or fact, we have found a few cribs in fall at the turnover period to hold baitfish and in turn muskies, besides holding my deep diving Slammer crankbaits.
I wish that Bill Schwartz would develope a reverse gear to get those baits off the cribs!

I`ve spent some time fishing cribs and have found that the ones that have weedgrowth near them out produce the other ones and those are the ones that I concentrate on. Suspending baits and Creatures are my first choice for fishing around cribs, But make sure and know exactly where the cribs sit. Location/presentation is the key. Beav

I second Beav's comments. Cribs with nearby cabbage or other vegetation can be very good. My favorite bait to throw at them is a deep diving crank. Sometimes they are very good, sometimes nothing. But, I guess you could say that about all structure, right? EJ

Slamr, I fished Presque Isle a few years ago and had some follows from nice-sized fish, but haven't been back since. It seems like that lake should give up a huge fish, but you never hear about them. I wonder how many people seriously pound that water and what their catch rates are like. It would be interesting to hear. Anyway, thanks a lot for the info. Anyone else have any opinions?
