1. When was the last year that the Ontario MNR stocked LOTW with muskies?

2. How long did they stock it?

Thanks.

Have fun!

As far as I know none of the lakes in NW Ontario have ever been stocked. There may be some stocking in some of the smaller eastern Ontario lakes (Karawatha's) but I doubt it. The only stocking that I know of for sure has been to reestablish
a muskie population in the Spanish Bay area of Lake Huron (G. Bay area).

I doubt they ever stocked it...I think there naturally there. Theyd have stock like a million a year for it to be noticeable.

Doug,
I've been fishing the Kawarthas (Lower Buckhorn) for 27 years and to my knowledge none of the lakes in the chain have ever been stocked with muskies. Walleyes were introduced in the 1930s or 1940s, but have been self sustaining for the last half century.

Yep, I was just guessing, I think the Lake Simcoe thing was stuck somewhere in the back of my brain (oldtimers). Otherwise, as far as I know there's been very little stocking of muskies in Canada. Once a long time ago I read that the MNR was thinking about introducing muskies in a few suitable NW Ontario lakes, but I don't think that ever happened.

As far as I know all the muskies in all NW Ontario lakes are naturally reproducing and at the mercy of mother nature. We need to be very careful of these resources.

There was some stocking done in Lac Seul, Sturgeon Lake and a few others in that area.

The Ministry used to raise lots of muskies in their Deer Lake Hatchery (near the Kawartha's) and stocked many central and eastern Ontario waters with them, including Georgian Bay and the St. Lawrence River. That hatchery is now closed.

I can understand why stocking LOTW may be a daunting task. I guess I should have phrased the question(s) a little broader.

Where & when has the Ontario MNR stocked muskies in either Central, NW or Western Ontario?

When did they stop?

Why did they stop?

Thanks to Doug J , Larry R and all who have replied. It certainly helps to understand the stocking perspective in Canada.

Have fun!

There was an active Muskie stocking program in The Sioux lookout area in the 1960's, including introduction to 13 lakes in that area.

Canada has over 70 waterbodies where Muskellunge have been introduced.

The best source of information you'll likely find is called:

Esocid Stocking:
An annotated Bibliography and Literature Review

Published by the Ontario MNR.

Search for it and you can download it. Too much info to post here.
