Hi guys, looking at a boat with the 2018 Evinrude 135 E-TEC HO 2 stroke. Does anybody have this motor? And how are the noise levels at travel and trolling speeds. I’m wondering how the newer two strokes are noise wise. I’ve only had a 1995 two stroke motor. Would I regret getting a 2 stroke for musky fishing because of noise and fumes? I’m not interested in getting a kicker. I would just run the main motor and electric trolling motor in the front. Thanks.

They are quiet and very fuel-efficient. The only drawback of that model is the fact Bombardier shut down Evinrude.

I had an E TEC a few years ago motor was quiet and low fumes. The big draw back on all E TEC s was the sprark plugs. The engine would not run properly unless the plug gap was in line with the factory "1/2 moon" on the head. If you want to check this on your engine pull a plug and see if there is a magic marker line downtime insulator in line with the gap. Plugs were marked by tecs so the position of the gap was known It took several boxes of plugs to get 4 that would work. I went to merc now so I don't know if the problem was fixed.

BRP continues to use E-TEC engines in their SkiDoo snowmobiles, so I would think that would help in continuing service, in that the power heads share much of the same technology.

Love My Etecs. Wouldn’t buy anything else. Sad they Discontinued. I will run mine till it dies, Or I Do!

First year they came out, I was asked as a Pro-Staffer to run this engine, and report my findings. Had about 2,300 hours after 3.5 years, but wanted to step up in power. Went to a 115 from a 90HP. No problems, other than Changing plugs 2-3 times a year. Was putting about 650 hours on engine a season. 2-3 sets of plugs was no problem for me as the amount of hours I was running. Indexing Plugs was simple once you learn how. Ask the techs to show you this procedure. Don’t buy your plugs from the Marine dealer. Go to a Napa or Autozone. About $6 cheaper a plug!

The hard water here in SE Wi. Does a number on water jackets W/ 4 strokes, W/ calcium and lime deposits. The etec’s, 2 stroke, Zero Problems with water flow!

They are So Easy to Winterize Head! A few Maneuvers with throttle Arm you’re set. Very quiet and fuel efficient!

I told all my friends about this engine, and they ALL loved Them!

Buy W/ Confidence….IMO

And that is a huge drawback in terms of resale value and parts availability down the road.

The e-tecs are quiet and incredible on fuel. I would own one despite resale concerns because boats are stupid, should never be owned with resale or appreciation as a goal.

I would only buy the boat if you are willing to repower it in the future. You may get lucky and run an Etec for years with no issues. Or you may have a problem right away and not be able to get parts for it. There are major issues getting gearcases, powerheads, fuel pumps... There is also issues finding dealers that want to work on them.

Hiya!!

Having owned an etec 150 for about 4 years now, I have to say I wish Bombardier never shut down their outboard program. The Etec, after it's debut back in....oh...2006 or so (if memory serves me correctly) got all the kinks and bugs worked out those first couple of years and they have been rock solid power-plants ever since.

kjgh might be correct in that parts years down the line might be hard to find, but that may be a ways away yet.....(tongue firmly in cheek here as I have not had to replace anything save plugs when I first purchased the rig I am in now).

The motor is really quiet at idle, starts on barely a turn of the key, is about a 5 minute total for winterizing, and very very smooth running. I would not hesitate to buy another at this point either. In the low oil use setting, the motor has no fumes, although I never minded the smell of 2 stroke exhaust for some reason...but that is me..

The integrated motor support is really nice as well... The trim motor is slower by design through the trim range, but once past high trim mark, it picks up for raising the motor out of the water.

The separate tank for filling oil is great and the fuel filter is easy to access and change.

Good motor!!

Steve

Since BDR did not go out of business and still sells into the recreational market, including SkiDoo and their new pontoon line, I would think they would continue to make parts available, if for no other reason than not alienating folks who might want to buy their other products. Just a guess but that would seem to be the smart business move. Might not be cheap, but available.

Mine has been flawless. Change VST return filter, change and index plugs properly, 10 micron water separator, and xd100 oil make for a long running engine.

Be sure to follow the schedule and prop near the high end of the range so motor doesn’t overheat. I love the 3 year schedule and haven’t seen any wear on any of the parts for the service.

Barnacle bills marine store has an etec forum with very helpful mechanics.
