So as a new devotee, what do we do in the offseason to best prepare for the new year?

If you need/want some additional gear, judging by Facebook market place, now is a good time to pick up used lures, rods/reels and nets.

Learn everything you can by reading and studying. Join a Muskies Inc Chapter. Winter fish for whatever you can, learning and refining other fishing techniques will assist with your muskie talents considerably. Go to the shows and attend seminars as Todd said. If he isn't there, it isn't a show.

Go to FL and fish for tarpon. J/k

Down here now in central FL visiting daughter. Brought two musky rods to bomb buzz baits into the grass while shore fishing on the lake they live on.

Off season isnt very long for us in S Ohio. I’ll stop in Dec and start back up in Feb/Mar depending on weather. Watch videos, go to the shows and seminars starting in Jan (we hope this year), make trip plans, arrange, rearrange and arrange again my tackle boxes.

Adding to the sharpening hooks suggestion....

Use a red or black sharpie (perm marker) on the freshly sharpened hook tips to prevent corrosion.

One winter I had the bright idea of using my dishwasher to clean all my hard baits before sharpening every point. I learned it takes about 20 minutes to load 150 lures, no problem. But it took 6 hours and two bloody hands to get all those lures back out of the dishwasher. I'll never do that again.
