Looking primarily at St. Croix Rods. Looking for any opinions on a Jerk Bait/Walk the Dog top water rod.
I'm just curious as to any recommendations length/Actions.

Thanks

I purchased my previous walk the dog rod because I got a good deal on it, but for my technique, it proved to be just a few inches too long. It was a 7' 6" Fenwick. Like the rod, just a bit too long for that application, and have re-purposed it for different applications. Last spring I bought St. Croix Premier, 7' heavy action, and love it. You may want longer, depending on your technique, and/or how tall you are.

I have a 7'9 Custom from Thorne Brothers build on a 7'6 ST Croix LT "The Jerk" blank. I added a few inches for increases leverage for keeping big fish pinned. It does a great job on most 6" plus glide baits that actually require some finesse to work: Phantoms, Shums etc...as well as WTD baits up to 10 Inches Long. The stock is great and if you bought it I bet you would be very happy. For me... when you can get it dialed in exactly how you want it for less than a $100 more than stock its worth it to me.

It honestly really depends on how high your decks are in your boat. I like a 7' or shorter jerkbait rod because my decks are lower. If your decks are higher you can use 7.5-8' rods.

deck height doesn't matter for me as I work gliders to the side... imo I get a much better hookset than working the rod downward.

I bought a LT Downsizer rod and love it for jerk baits. It is 7'10", median heavy, fast action. It has been perfect for the working both wtd and dive and rise baits and is nice on the wear and tear on your wrists over the long haul.

Thanks for the comments... I fish from a Ranger 620 and i'm 6-3" so I think I'll shoot for a 8 foot plus rod at least.

Just bought one of these yesterday at the Wausau Expo, for large jerks, gliders and walk the dogs. Now in a month or two when the ice in front of my house is gone, I will be able to give a report on it ;>).
