crazy cold spring with tons of snow... my guess is the big lakes in Vilas won't open til May 20th.
What have been someo of the latest ice outs in history?

A few years back the ice in chequamegon bay went out on May 10th (iirc). Most years the ice leaving the bay coincides fairly close with the inland lakes around here. I think this year will be at least then. Possibly later.

that's a pretty good number

i'd say we've had <10 days of what i'd call "thaw", probably less working on N/NW shorelines and unless it's aerated or has current it's still pretty tight and to 32" and even more of ice.

this snowfall ... about 14-18" locally should make em pretty slushy and help rot the ice from the top if the warmth ever does come.

the latest i remember since 1998 was the second week of May and i think that was about 4 or 5 years ago, this one should be the latest i've seen.

a fun anecdote ... heard the other day from my son who works at the dock shop that people are calling confirming and demanding their dock installations be on-time for their scheduled date of April 19th.

I ice fished two openers in a row after the Polar Vortex winters. While this isn't a Vortex winter, I have zero doubt than in 2.5 weeks, we'll be tip up fishing the opener in Land O Lakes.

May 20th seems about right for everything north of Duluth. I'm guessing May wk 1 for the TC Metro

The small chain I live on is one of the first to open in Oneida because it is dark water and has three creeks feeding it so pretty good current. 2013, it went out a couple days before the opener. One guy who has had a place on the lake for over 40 years said he could not remember an opener with ice, but this will be the year, barring some extraordinary change in the weather pattern.

Anybody know how much ice is on some of the lakes yet? I had heard 15" in Vilas from a unreliable source

I was up the weekend of April 6-9th. 24-28" with a hard pack and snow on top.

24" was in January ... extensions were needed on conventional augers mid March and ice grew since then ... lotsa ice out there.

Turtle flowage has 28-32 in spots. Buddy on trout couldn't punch through with I think he said a 42" bit on his auger.

We didn't have an open water opener in 2013, and IIRC, the dock went in the following weekend on May 12.

This year is looking worse, but things can change fast with some rain and a stretch of above freezing lows

Snow pack is absolutely nuts here. Weather pattern is warming after snow tomorrow south, but nothing in the upper 60's or higher for nearly a month. We are not supposed to see 60 until the 28th.

May not be in a hurry to pick up our new ride this Spring.

My hope is that we don't get caught in a fishing limbo, where the ice is not safe, but there's too much ice to fish. I guess there's always Honey Do lists?

Drove my truck on 4 lakes in the infamous Otter Tail County this weekend. 30+ inches of ice still solid from top to bottom. The melt down finally started yesterday and with the forecasted temps and long days it's going to happen fast around here. Caught a bunch of panfish, bass, pike and walleyes so I guess the muskies didn't get them all yet. I'm predicting all lakes in this area will be fishable (from a boat) by MN walleye opener May 12.

I'm hoping I don't have to wear a base layer to the Land O Lakes 4th of July Parade.
