Do any of you use a split ring on the eye of a suick? I never have but a guy I fished with a couple weeks ago swore by them. What do others think?

I do not use any split rings for any of my lures. I feel it is better used as a replacement for another lure.

comes down to what you think about it. I have a couple suicks that have a few dozen fish each on them with no split ring and one that has caught fish with the split ring. try both and see what happens.

The new HI Suicks - no need.

The older ones - yes.

Not for action improvement or anything. It's just easier to clip them on the snaps that I use. That new HI's have a larger eyelet.

I don't think it matters. Don't over think it.

I have split rings on several of mine (not the HI ones) because its hard to get the snaps I use on without them. Makes changing them out much easier and quicker.

All my baits have split rings on them and I never use snaps, they can fail easier than snaps.

X2 on the split rings. If your leader has a solid ring at the end you can attach them quite easily with a split ring pliers and do away with opening and closing the same split ring continually thereby weakening it.

I use a split ring on any bait that I have trouble getting the snap on correctly. I have noticed that I search out the heaviest but smallest diameter snaps I can get by with. that being said, look at your whole setup....100 lb braid, 150 lb staylok, with a split ring rated for 65 lb test is an accident waiting to happen. The other thing I see with split rings allot is for some reason guys do not want to throw them away. After the gap widens or the snap has been used multiple times let it retire. Just like snaps, we open and close them hundreds of times, use a new one.
On some baits I count on the split ring to allow centering of the snap on the retrieve. Some baits are made with offset eyelets. add a split ring and your set.

No split ring I've every seen opened up under pressure. Always had other things break when I did try to break off a snag. I've had snaps break or open up, so split rings are far more reliable than any snap.

I have had 2 split rings break on Jakes, one cost me a large fish and possibly that fishes life. The other was a 40 inch fish caught casting.

^ yup. Had split rings get pretzeled twice by fish. one was this year. still caught them thankfully. these were the hook splits, not the line tie.
