Suckers?

I was thinking of going muskie fishing in central MN on Friday. I called stop light bait in St. Cloud to check on sucker availability, The guy said they had them. I asked the price he said $17.99 for anything over 17 inches and $14 for for suckers between 14 and 17 inches- I laughed out loud. I thought he was kidding (he was kidding right?)

Would anyone pay $17.99 for a sucker?

Yes.

I tried Ben's bait in West Battle a few weeks ago and someone came in and had bought all 18 he had that morning.

I get mine for 8-10, but if I had to pay $20 each I would. Because they work.

Alot of the bait store owners have been saying that they are hard to get this year because the last 2 winters have been so hard on all of there bait ponds. Maybe that's there way of selling them for the prices that they are asking. Could be be worse, but they put fish in the boat and that's what I want, especially this time of year. Trophy fish like a nice piece of prime rib, as do I.

In the past month for 13-14"-ers I've paid...
N. Wisconsin: $11
S. Wisconsin: $8
IL: $7
IN: $4.50, yes $4.50!

I can't get suckers around here. I would pay $15 a piece for them every now and then.

I am a huge fan of using XL suckers this time of year. Having said that, I would NEVER ever consider paying 18$ for a sucker. the most I paid this year for two giant suckers was $25 ($12.50 each)and that was once and I am not likely to do that again. I am paying an average of about $8 in the twin cities area for some absolute giant suckers.

They are not lying. Last year in the Central MN area it was impossible to get them.

It was impossible for the angler or bait shop?
I find it hard to believe when a guy in the Cities can pick up a sucker for reasonable price whenever he wants and a bait shop 100 miles away can't.
Likely the bait shop owner doesn't want to spend the extra coin to get them when chances are they'll die before he or she gets a muskie fisherman into the shop to buy them.

Wow. That is spendy. I did see $15 suckers (17") at thorne. He said they sell as fast as they get em. The last time I used suckers 4-5 years ago, they were $3 ea. For 3 pounders. Supply and demand drives price but I have to think greed plays a small part too if someone is paying $8 for giant in the metro and most places are $15+.

Here in Indiana suckers are $4.50 each! Talked to the owner of the bait store and he said all his suckers come for Wisconsin and he doesn't have any problems getting them. Sounds like something fishy going on up north!
