Has anyone ever gotten a hook in the hand while rigging up a sucker? Hasn't happened to me but makes me nervous every time. Especially putting in the 2nd one.

hold the sucker by the head, sometimes I'll use a rag, but a feisty sucker is a good thing, so just be careful lol. Last thing I want is a sucker to lay there w/ no response while I stab at it w/ a few treble hooks. I usually throw one on the underside between the tail and dorsal, and a smaller treble somewhere behind the head. Sucker always stays upright, and hardly ever end up with a dead sucker at the end of the day if it doesn't get crushed by a ski'.

I think the key ingredient is a small towel. Look for a bath towel the wife is about to toss and then cut it into about eight or ten pieces to stow on-board. Take your lively sucker out of the dip-net directly with the towel wrapping it like a hot dog in a bun. Only 2 or 3 seconds held firmly in the towel will put the sucker right into calmness. Your grip is just great and your ability to place hooks precisely where you choose is insured. Now, the most important part: at the end of the day DON'T put the towel back in the compartment with your extra sweat shirt and your rain suit.....use it to check your oil dipstick and then throw it away....cuz it's gonna stink!

better yet, i put the left hand Musky Armor glove on when i rig them....one, you can get a much better grip on the fiesty buggers and two... you won't get hooked as easy... hold sucker w left hand....hooks w right, scrape scales, put hook thru, bingo.

A few weeks ago my brother was removing some sucker remnants from the rig and couldn't get a piece off. So my buddy told him to hold it and instead of carefully taking it off the hook he tried to rip it out (not thinking about the top hook) and the top hook slid down right onto my brother's hand. I have no idea how he came out of that unscathed... I thought I was going to be taking out the medical kit for sure.

last year, after I was done fishing w/ a sucker on a custom quick strike rig, there was still some pieces of meat on the treble from the sucker. Well I threw the hooks in my flow-troll and put it away and forgot to pull those hooks out when I got home, and OMG you want to talk about stink.....it about knocked me on my A**. Wasn't much on the hooks either, it's amazing how fowl 1 small piece of dead fish can make your storage compartment stink lol....never do that again. Same applies with your handling gloves....make sure they get rinsed off and left out in the open to dry out....they will funkify your stuff as well.

Good advice above grabbing them by the head clamping the gills shut. They typically stay calm then. One other thing, be quick once you let the rigged sucker loose untill you get it in the water. They go nuts and can undo all your rigging in an instant. Same when you bring them out of the water, don't dangle them over the side, get them from the water to the boat quick.

Gloves first, simple sand second. Grab the sand at the access as you put in.

Let them dry out for a minute before rigging them - much easier to grip.
