figure a lot of you guys will find this video interesting enough...
Back in May 2012, I volunteered with the MN DNR in a mark and recapture abundance estimate (a study that also caters to a host of other interesting possible findings...). We were electro-fishing specifically for muskie (this was part of the recapture process). Anal fins were clipped during initial marking which involved trap netting, and dorsal fins were also punched during the initial marking as an easy visual indicator of them being a possible recapture (during electro-fishing). Scale samples are taken from all sampled fish to genetically identify the fish, and anglers will/were also be submitting scale samples from those caught while fishing (and their scales will be genetically identified for possible recap etc). These are some small to medium size fish, but a good taste of electro shocking for 'skies!!!

sorta "milking" them... mostly just as a possible quick indicator of sex...
it's a great experience helping out the management crew. Many offices will frequently take volunteers. Great way to learn, meet some good people, and help out. Lots of resources that the state of MN generates that are underutilized by many as well... Survey reports and the management staff serve as a wealth of knowledge.

This is alot of fun. I had a summer job just out of high school with the DNR and we electro surveyed the fox and Kankakee rivers at different points from their respective state line to the Illinois river. I netted, weighed, measured and identified. Some interesting and rare fish in these rivers.
